I think it was both mate. The money initially offered and he backed himself as thought he was the king of promoting and could sign anyone (that was a disaster when none of the PBC lot joined them), while also thinking he was Mr social media and could sell any fight through his own gob because he had circa 1 million twitter followers.
What do we make of Garcia? Is this all a massive game act, or is he genuinely losing the plot? Quite an odd watch the stuff this week
Can’t imagine it did. Boxing should really be a speck of dust on a sports channel’s contracts and if done right with occasional PPVs, almost pay for itself (as Trafford has often said about Sky and Boxxer). There might have been a payoff involved with Frank, or he’d have been forced into cooperation with Matchroom before Saudi got there, but surely it didn’t get in the way of a deal involving billions of pounds of football rights fees?
I agree it sounds far fetched, but I’ve heard it several times. If it had happened and they secured 25% of the PL games and all European football involving British clubs they would be growing rather than shrinking.
Looks like someone who is in serious need of some guidance. Could be another Chavez Jnr with all the issues he had.
Scammers only get away with mugging people so far before there is wide public awareness and the loot dries up. Hearn and DAZN UK management really should read the Trustpilot feedback as there is no future under the poor offering, current price plan and business practices.
I don't get why to date, none of these youtube journos have picked up on this and asked Alfie Hermann or even Joe Slobodowski about the awful terrible trustpilot feedback they've received.?
He's clearly suffering from serious mental health problems. The likes of Hearn, De La Hoya and Hopkins should be ashamed of themselves for letting this fight go ahead.
Well they’d have inherited an audience, that’s for sure. There are plenty complaints now that people have to activate a Discovery+ sub (with a freebie for old BT Sport/TV subscribers) just to keep the channels they had, so it may not be growing that much. DAZN would have been the same. Viaplay has shown that having presence in other markets doesn’t guarantee anything here - although again, their package of rights doesn’t get them that far outside of Scotland!
Yes the business model is completely broken and the end must be near as even very wealthy Russians will eventually stop pouring millions down the drain. Hearn must have thought that he could produce the turd he did on his final 3 years on Sky Sports and people would be willing to pay an additional subscription of £14.99 to £19.99 per month to watch it with any decent fight moving to Box Office on top. Surely he did not realise that people subscribe to Sky Sports for a plethora of live sports with boxing well down the pecking order of importance for a large percentage of subscribers. People shafted rarely return, they tell everyone they know about the shafting, social media is full of shafted people and now DAZN UK Mgt along with Hearn are at the bottom of a mountain wondering how to stop the giant snowball gathering speed every day. The only way back would be to revert to £1.99 per month with immediate effect, bring back the flexibility to dip in and out, scrap Box Office, get much better UK cards back at least 2-3 times per month then it may have a chance to rebuild.
I don't think it's any coincidence that Hearn Sr got out of the way as soon as the DAZN model kicked in. He defended it to start with but now talks about Saudi being the future. I think he expected DAZN to be a global bankroller of boxing, and that just hasn't worked out. It is now working out via Saudi where the money wasn't a problem. Also no coincidence Hearn Jr has been a bit more vocal about how successful darts is (his next cash cow, no doubt) and having an opinion on snooker which he rarely does. I suspect he's about to bust snooker into more of a Sky Sports "casuals" thing, just as his dad did with darts 30 years ago, and he'll turn darts into even more of a global league like snooker has done; today's players will hate it but the future, younger, fitter ones will get stuck in. He knows Matchroom Boxing is nothing at scale without Joshua and that's got 2-3 years max, so now it's Matchroom + Queensberry vs the rest of the world and DAZN non-PPV is almost an afterthought with a few date commitments to hit.
Noticed recently that the DAZN UK 'exclusive content' such as Women's Football is now appearing on TNT Sports as well. Barcelona W v Chelsea W live today on TNT Sports is an example. Those huge losses need to be addressed and it may not be too long before history is repeated when Boxnation became free for BT Sports subscribers in 2017 before being later purchased by Premier Sports.
Does anyone know if you can purchase the fight tonight on your Sky box? I've gone to look at the DAZN PPV channel but it's just showing "programmes coming soon" across the day.
