Yes Or No - Is Salvador Sanchez A Greater Fighter Then Julio Cesar Chavez?

If we’re talking about things like technique and other abilities in the ring he might have been. If we’re talking about what they actually proved over time then no, but that isn’t Sanchez’ fault for dying so young

 

Sanchez may have had the potential to be greater, but, if I had to vote on what actually happened, I would vote "no."

 

This is the only proper answer, we only had him until he was 23. My God what he accomplished was crazy but then when you think that he really may not have even been in his prime let alone peaked.

But we have to go by what we have, I think we have to pick JCC because his book was complete.

 

If by achievements, obviously Chávez. If who was better? Sánchez, IMO.

Yes, Sanchez was greater. We never saw him decline but I think his best wins over Danny Lopez, Wilfredo Gomez, and Azumah Nelson surpass Chavez's best wins over Edwin Rosario, Jose Luis Ramirez, and Meldrick Taylor. I don't really consider the last one a legit win either. In my eyes, there is only one Mexican GOAT and it's Chava, not Chavez.

 

Using the eye test, Sanchez was better.

Sanchez accomplished a lot by age 23. What that is worth depends on how you rate Little Red at that point in his career or overall; in my opinion, and Little Red was my childhood GOD, Lopez was past his best by a good stretch when he fought Sanchez and his exciting style overshadows the fact that he was too easy to hit and too limited in many other ways. It depends on how you value the win over Gomez. Gomez didn't do much at 26, and he was moving up after a long time of really struggling to make 22.
There is zero doubt in my mind that, had Sanchez lived and met Chavez at 130 or 35 that Chavez would have knocked him out. Ruben Castillo certainly thought so, and he thought that Arguello would have stopped Sanchez as well. (And he fought Sanchez and Arguello within 90 days).
Sanchez was a good fighter...great, maybe, but he didn't do enough. He struggled with a green Nelson, while Chavez, at 130, would have decisively beaten a more experienced Nelson, and would have killed him at 135.

 

Chavez at 130 to 135 has become absurdly underrated because the older version hung on too long and lost his edge way before he retired .. the prime Chavez was a monster, period.

 

Achievement wise ? no

Chavez won titles at Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Jr Welterweight.

And had more filler to his record with wins over Meldrick Taylor, Rocky Lockridge, Jose Luis Ramirez, Roger Mayweather, Edwin Rosario, Greg Haugen, Juan LaPorte, Hector Camacho, Ruben Castillo, Mario Martinez. Tony Lopez, etc.

Regarding eye test ? Sanchez looked more dazzling at his best, but also had his fair share of struggles along the way aswell vs the likes of Patrick Ford, Pat Cowdell, who Chavez would've destroyed without much too many problems.

As for H2H match up between the two ? impossible to say because we have no idea how effective Sanchez would've been at Super Featherweight/Lightweight.

Sanchez had one of the best resumes ever for a fighter of his age, but unfortunately i still don't think it's enough to surpass Chavez. Could Sanchez have surpassed Chavez's record ? possibly but again as i alluded to earlier we don't know how effective Sanchez would've been at higher weightclasses. Plus he'd already been in alot of tough fights at a young age, the tough fights could've caught up to him and he could've declined.

It's all speculation which we will never know but if im judging fairly then Chavez rates higher for me.

 

No. He may or may not have ended up being so if his career was not cut short. As it stands he was champion in one division for two years
