Competing in amateur boxing

Hey, this is for all of you who come on and want to learn to box and get some fights, but don't know how. Each of us with some experience will post how to go about doing it in our respective countries. I'll start with the US

Competing in USA Boxing:

To do this you'll need to find the registration chair for your LBC. USA Boxing is composed of LBCs (Local Boxing Committee) and is responsible for the registration of all people in their jurisdiction. For example, if you live in Washington DC, you would register in the Potomac Valley Association LBC (and as an aside, you would need to go to Sugar Ray Leonard's gym to do this). This is a full list of the LBCs in USA Boxing: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

To register you'll need 2 passport photos and a copy of your birth certificate, and if under 18, you need a parent signature. It costs 40 dollars a year and you're registered for the whole year that way. You'll be given a USA Boxing passbook which will over time reflect the record of the fights you've had. From there, you just need to get in a gym and get to work (typically, you would get your passbook after being in the gym a while, though). Also, as a note, you don't need to be with a gym to get registered. When the registration chair asks what club you're with, just say you're unattached.

Also, an extra note: the Golden Gloves is NOT a seperate sanctioning body. It is a franchise that is a member group of USA Boxing, along with the National PAL. Golden Gloves is a major ranking tournament that, like the USAs, begins at the LBC level, progresses to the regional (or in the case of Golden Gloves, franchise) level; and if you win that are on to the National Championships.

Excellent, stickied for future reference. Additional information for other countries will be appreciated, so don't be shy if you have anything to add to Kolya's post.

Note: If you compete in tough man contests, you will be banned from amateur boxing for life.

In Doucheland (Netherlands) you need to apply at the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]. Same as in the USA, two passport photo's and a copy of your ID card or passport need to be included.

All needed information can be found at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] but in my case my coach did all the paperwork because he can get things done faster :D

In the US you are required a to fill out a basic information registrtion form, a copy of your birth certificate, and two passport sized photos (which you can just get at a drug store). Along with thirty five dollars, and then you're registered for the year. You have to re-register every year. We dont have to apply to no Nederlandse Boksbond though... For example, my trainer sends our stuff to the ABA boxing council in Conneticut or something like that. Im not sure though, my trainers have always sent it away to be approved for me.

Um...all Nederlandse Boksbond is is the Dutch boxing council. So no, being in the US you wouldn't apply to them. Everything else is already covered in detail in my post if you're within the US.

Wow, really? Why is that?

My assistant trainer competed in one of those "Tough Man" contests and was able to fight an amateur fight later, although it was one of those "trainer vs trainer" special exhibition matches. Maybe it was an exception?

Exhibitions are allowed, tough man isn't because there's usually prize money involved and that's against the rules of amateur boxing.

Exhibitions aren't allowed in the US either.

Oh, I think they are over here. I've done one, and several of competing boxers from my gym as well. We didn't register or sign up for anything so it won't be a problem.

Exhibitions are allowed in Canada I had one it goes towards your total fights as well.

To enter the provincials you need 5 fights, I have 1 exhibition so I only need 4 more fights.

It's basically a draw on your record.

Join a boxing gym, wait till the trainer arranges for you to get carded and medicalled, then he will get you matches.
