Icing knees/joints after workouts?

Someone at my gym ices each knee after a workout (generally 20 min at home). His workout includes boxing and running on concrete. Does this really work?

Ya it works, I always have ice on me somewhere when I'm loungin. Mostly where my calf meets my shin bone on the inside. Shin splints? Or on my gimpy right shoulder. Helps a lot..

How long do you recommend taking cold baths for? Should I follow it up with a warm/hot/cold shower afterwards? Thanks.
