Roy Jones on MMA and Boxing

I pinched this from a post on a popular MMA site. Intelligent take on the whole debate.....

Don't know if its been posted, but here it is for interest's sake. Please note that I love both sports and do not partake in the whole debate (you know which one I'm talking about), so if people want to turn this into one of those threads go nuts, but I will not partake in it.

"I watch it all the time. They have the best fighters fighting the best fighters and that's what boxing needs. You never can tell what will happen in a fight. Look at the last [Chuck] Liddell fight. Bam, 10 seconds it was over. They got that explosion they were waiting for. Boxing didn't get the same explosion out of Mayweather-De La Hoya," Jones said.

"UFC is a great thing, but boxing has to get on it's a game. UFC is the best fighting the best and that what boxing has to do. If you are an ultimate fighter, you are going to fight someone who is going to fight. In UFC, if you lose to a good fighter, you lost, you still know you are good fighter, and you come back the next day and fight again. In boxing, if you lose and that's it. You are done.I lose a few fights they want to tell me I'm washed up and I don't have it no more."

Jones was realistic when asked about his chances in a UFC ring. He knows that he is vulnerable on the ground and possesses a clear advantage if the fight stays on top.

"Now, I can't get on the ground and start wresting because I know nothing about that. But if I hit him before he gets to the ground, he's not going to get up and have the chance to wrestle," Jones said.

Hmm. Jones actually speaking a bit a sense?

I'm surprised.

Wow. So much sense from Roy.

I love how everyone in boxing recognises its flaws, blame it on everyone but themself and yet don't realise they are a major factor in these flaws.

Guys like Roy, DiBella, Mayweather, Arum, ****** and anyone else who has commented on it.

Boxing needs less weight divisions, no belts except for one per weight class, all fighters are forced to fight one another.

yeah because a MMA fight is never ended when ssomeone shoots for a takedown and gets knocked out, that never ever ever would happen. Take the pro MMA anti Boxing goggles off.It could happen, I say there is a 10% chance of it happening, with someone like Roys handspeed.

while I do agree, well not the weight class things. There is a big difference in 3-4lbs when someone is 135lbs and under, it really is a big deal.

The 1 belt per weightclass would be Pimp, no doubt, but MMA doesnt have that. Just in Zuffa you have Pride, UFC, and the WEC

Thats different. UFC, Pride, WEC is not the same as WBC, WBO, IBF shit. With MMA they are separate enteties up until recently with Pride and UFC. But Pride is pretty much dead so its still separate.

how is the UFC and Pride thing any different? It may be changing, but I dont know, now that Page-Hendo isnt for the belts.

Fedor is called the world HW champ and so is Couture.

You gota get those boxing goggles off.. First of all, anything can happen. I'd give a chance of 3% tops of RJJ knocking a good wrestler out coming in with a shot. Thats 1 ko out of 33 take down attempts. He's fast, but he's not a knock out artist. Not to mention RJJ is made for take downs even though he's awesome to watch in a ring. Its not easy to knock someone out with one shot, which blind boxing fans tend to believe. They might catch them and stand than back up with a good uppercut, but they will NOT have time to make it a solid one for a KO.

Now, the point im making, if you gona come in to fight betting on 1 punch KO. You might as well not come at all.

Because one org doesn't allow you to fight in other orgs.

Actually RJJ is a knock-out artist. He had chilling power at 160 and say he was fighting at the WW limit in the UFC he'd knock guys out if he was to catch them perfectly. So I'd give it a little higher than 3% myself.

Re: Roy Jones on MMA and Boxing

then how is Hendo fighting Page?

Mayhem has fought in different orgs at the smae time, Trigg as well. Fedor is the Pride HW champ and just fought in Bodog. uhhuhh yeah. Once again MMA purists being uneducated.
