what happened to silva in the first fight?

i didn't see the first fight as i didn't have pay-per-view at that time, so i've only seen snippets of it.
i've only seen a few of silva's fights and he always seems elusive, so how come sonnen hit him so much?

looking at the bits i have seen of their fight, silva looked a different fighter than the one i've seen in other fights.
was it just a case of sonnen making silva look bad because he was too good for him?
did silva simply have one of those 'off' days that fighters experience sometimes?

although sonnen had the best of it on the ground, in the end he couldn't finish the fight there.
was that because with silva being a black belt in jui-jistu he was able to stop sonnen doing that? or was he just fortunate in the end that he lasted?

people sing sonnen's praises and rightly so, however he didn't win.
a fight is five rounds, and the fighters have those five rounds to win. it doesn't matter which round.
silva won in the last round. i can't see that he was lucky like a lot of people say.
part of being a great fighter is to take the opportunity when it arises, which he did, and he won.
he survived the onslaught then submitted him. silva doesn't seem to get any praise for doing so.

Re: what happened to silva in the first fight?

1) Silva had a rib injury and was unhappy and homesick. He did not have a good leadup to the fight.

2) Sonnen was roided, which helped his strength and gas tank.

3) Bad style matchup for Silva anyway.

4) Sonnen fought out of his fucking skin. He had no fear of Anderson at all.

5) He was lucky in the sense that the fight was at a stage where all Chael had to do was run out the clock. Sonnen elected to keep pressing the action for the last two minutes and Silva showed his brilliance by taking the one chance to submit him. But it was more a case of Chael losing than Anderson winning IMO. :good

Silva honestly just fought for the KO, he was hurt and trying to end the fight quickly because of his injury, I honestly believe that. He tried uncharacteristically dumb things against pretty much the best wrestler at 185, like jumping knees and shit and kept getting taken down.

Fully expecting a great Silva W to erase any doubt on Saturday.

Agree with all this but I think Silva also got obsessed with his own power and skill. I was watching an interview with some fighters and their predictions and one mentioned how hes looked since the sonnen the fight. He's an ali type fighter who is so skilled he can only really get himself up for big fights so I expect to see him come into this fight looking like a beast.

thanks for the link.
i think the description of him being like ali is accurate.
i expect silva to beat sonnen in the first round.

the only thing i don't get from the first fight was why was silva getting hit so much. sonnen isn't known for his striking.

When a guy is proven to have cheated on roids/trt etc on a fight then you can't use that fight as an example of how good he is.

Sonnen has pretty decent boxing. He throws straight punchwes, he has a good beard and he's aggressive. Plus I think that most guys are mainly concerned about him taking them down and wrestlefucking them, so they tend to be defending the takedown rather than the punches. :good

At least in part it was to protect his ribs I reckon.

In the same way werdum landed so many shots on Overeem it was because he was worried about Werdums grappling.

No because you judged them on their performances against other steroid boosted athletes

He had his hands so low because he was waiting for Sonnen to try and take him down.
