Frank Mir, right, lost to UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos in UFC 146 in May.
USA TODAY Sports confirmed with UFC and Strikeforce officials that Mir had agreed to meet Strikeforce grand prix winner and former two-time Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 Strikeforce) in the co-main event of the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy fight card Sept. 29 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento. It will air on Showtime.

"There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense," UFC President Dana White said. "The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy."

Strikeforce was purchased by the UFC's parent company, Zuffa, in March 2011. The companies have since operated independently, and differences between White and Strikeforce's broadcast partners at Showtime have led to a largely frosty relationship. However, this booking represents a temporary change in direction, as the UFC and Strikeforce rosters were previously considered mutually exclusive.

After the fight, both Mir and Cormier will compete in the UFC after a decision this past fall for Strikeforce to dissolve its heavyweight division and focus on developing other weight classes. Many of the company's heavyweights moved to the UFC, while Cormier stayed to finish out the heavyweight tournament.

Then again, maybe not...

It was widely reported that the ex-UFC heavyweight champion had signed a four-fight contract with the promotion, and would fight Strikeforce Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier in late Septemnber.

However, this appears to not be the case. White said the signing was never announced, and that "long story, but yes, Tim is not with Zuffa."

White received criticism earlier today, as he had told the media that Tim Sylvia was not an option to fight Cormier, before today's news of Sylvia's signing broke online

But, as is usually the case with rumors, in the words of White himself: "Never a FACT unless I say it is."

No chance. Much like Barnett his beef with Dana is personal. The fact his signed with SF when the Org is on the verge of closing shows how much of a F Dana really gives. Its disgusting that some some fighters are now limited where they can fight and break bread.

Barnett had publicly insulted Dana many times and Dana still said he is welcome in the UFC after his SF contract.

Tim is a different story, the main reason he hates him so much is because when he left he fought Fedor and got a 19 sec beatdown, shortly after get's ko'd in 10 secs by a 50 yr old boxer. He embarassed MMA and UFC and Dana really hasn't forgotten about that.

Barnett and Dana's beef goes back to the early 2000's. Either way iv never read or heard anything of the sort about Dana welcoming him back to the UFC after SF folds.

As for Tim is that a legitimate enough reason? You actually believe its because Tim lost to the GOAT, got beat down by Mercer and all the while Dana was incensed because he disgraced MMA? Really bro? Reeeeeaalllly?
I'm pretty certain their beef was over money. Sylvia wanted more than he was 'worth' Dana refused. And Sylvia got what he asked for else where (Affliction et al) as there were options. Now there are none. Though i'm surprised he hasn't gone to OneFC.

Yes Tim got what he wanted elsewhere in Affliction which way overpaid alot of their fighters and a big reason why they went tits up. Really bro really.....I know he left because of money but there were interviews after the mercer fight and as usuall Dana didn't sugarcoat how he felt about Tim.

There were. But Tim and Dana's beef was a personal spat between the two. To imply it was because Dana took umbrage over Tim making a mockery out of MMA because of his loss to Mercer is not only disingenuous its a lie.
Remember Tim was the UFC heavyweight champion once, two times. His pedigree is/was obviously proven. One loss to Mercer doesn't dispel that.

Tim's Pedigree? he was champ when UFC had 2 guys him and AA, It wasn't just 1 loss to Mercer. It was a 9 sec KO from a 50 yr old. There was various reads and vids that showed what Dana said about him after.....

Besides has Tim tried Bellator or one FC? Bellator would be a perfect home for him to get his career on track. Although him fighting Cormier would be a bad idea at least Cormier get's a named opponent and Dana can see Tim get beat up again.

Dress it up however you want. It doesn't change the fact that Tim WAS a x2 legitimate UFC champion. Yeah he was horrible to watch but that doesn't discount his accomplishments or wins.
And i'm sure you recall that division at that time included perenial contender and Champion Frank Mir. The title back then was a merry-go-round between AA Tim and Frank. Either way its anecdotal.
The point is Dana's beef with Tim is not soley because he made MMA look bad because he lost to Tim Mercer.

I hope Sylvia and Cormier doesn't happen. It's a complete waist of time. Luring Fedor out of retirement would be way more interesting.

I really hope they let Werdum fight Cormier, and let the winner challenge for the UFC title.

Why not ship him to the UFC and be over with it already? If the Zuffa want him to fight a decent opponent then whats stopping them?
