Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
@135.
Home page article asks if Mayweather is a once in a lifetime fighter. I'm not sure he beats Sweat Pea (or Pee Wee if you're Ferdie Pacheco). Anyways, who do you pick in this one? |
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
i like pee wee in this one by decision.
|
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
Whitaker wins a decision.
|
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
Whitaker wins because he was better.
|
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
So far, we all agree.
So how in the fuck is Money a once in a lifetime fighter? |
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
Whitaker would be the busier fighter and was much better with his inside game....
Also, actually Whitaker had more tools to outbox Floyd IMO, for example a better jab by far ! So, basically Whitaker could do everything better  ! |
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
I too would pick Whitaker by decision.
|
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
Whitaker batters and stops an exhausted Floyd in 10 rounds
|
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
Whitaker would use one of his greatest assets, his fleet-footed angles, against Floyd's relative lack of mobility & ability to punch on the move without setting himself.
|
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
I would take Sweet Pea, but not with any major confidence. I think he had a slightly better overall blend of offense and defense than PBF.
Not sure if he is a once in a lifetime fighter, but he has a case for being the best since Pea. |

Then there's the way his career has played out. A bit staged and not a ton of risks taken, but how many guys have there been that picked up titles across 5 divisions over a span of 16 years and never once suffered defeat? He sure as hell isn't a once in a lifetime kind of talent (he's special, alright, just not that special), so it almost has to be something like that. |

In this HBO $$$ age Floyds done a greatjob in navigating his way deep into the HBO $$$ trough by succesfully avoiding the real legacy fights so that he could get his shot at the golden $$ egg laying mothergoose in DLH & that was always his & everyone else's target & once there he intends to stay there with HBO's blessing & the 1st sign of danger he'd just retire & wait till the danger had passed. Like you i think he's a very good boxer but i can't give him the status of being great or legend material because his resume is sparse to say the least & he can't have it both ways, money & legacy earned, but as floyd always said, legacy don't pay the bills, he's been a major disappointment for me considering that he maybe could have been up there with the ATG's if he'd taken on the challenges & cleaned out divisions but i think those days will never return now we have HBO ruling the boxing world & feeding the great unwashed this diet of 24/7 gash, bread & circuses for the masses & very little to do with the purist angle of what a real championship is about. Pacquiao is of the old school mould who went after the accepted rulers of the divisions or near top of. |
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
In terms of boxing ability/skills/talent Whitker > Mayweather but it's not Whitaker >>>>>>> Mayweather. It's also interms of Ring smats/Boxing IQ
Mayweather > Whitaker but not Mayweather >>>>>>> Whitaker When it comes down to it there about even. Mayweather is bigger. I think that will make the deciding difrance in this match up. |
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
Mayweather is so overrated it hurts.
|
Re: Floyd Mayweather, Jr v Pernell Whitaker
Ask the same question 15 years from now (or when did Whitaker have last meaningful fight) and the results will be different.
