James Toney never been stopped in about 80 pro boxing fights.

Steps in the octagan with Randy Couture and via traingle choke hold strangulation gets forced into submission in the 1st round.

Toney got good skills as a boxer - and he is very tough and durable.

But even Toney was forced to submit when randy clamped down on him.

How does a skilled combat fighter - avoid having a choke taking him out ?

And if that had been a street fight with no ref to step in and Randy kept the choke hold on Toney like that - would he have killed him from strangulation ?

A choke will kill someone if held on long enough.

You don't endure it, you learn to defend it, counter it, or never end up there in the first place.

Well, Randy would have choked him unconscious on the street. If he had found himself on the street with a less stable person, perhaps he would be choked to death.

Why is it such a devestating move ?

Is it simply because it cuts of the oxygen supply ?

Or does it do more than that ?

The pressure of the choke closes carotid arteries which deprives the brain of oxygen. It doesn't take very long to lose consciousness.

Cuts off the blood/oxgen to the brain. Doesn't take any more than that.

Is it possible to strengthen the neck to make you more durable to the suffocation process ?

so basically if someone gets you in a choke hold - like Randy got Toney into and you cannot get out of it - then you are looking at - submission at best - or unconciouness or death in a ungoverned street fight ?

Once it's on, if you don't know how to escape, you're gone.

Pretty much. A big issue is that something like a triangle, arm triangle, or a rear naked choke can be relatively painless, and you don't even realize that you are going to sleep until it's too late, and the person applying the choke may not notice. That's why occasionally you will hear stories like the one last year about the 14 year old kid accidentally choking his uncle to death.

But if you know what you are doing, chokes are pretty safe and incredibly effective weapons.

I'm thinking MMA because alot of street fighting descends into grappling and goes to the floor.
