Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy7n_6O-Qqk&feature=related[/ame]
There's the full fight. Hearns won a very wide unanimous decision here, but I wanted to talk about his performance against the tough Minchillo. Tommy stalked him all night, landing jabs and body shots almost at will. However, Luigi was very game and fought through adversity like a champ, regardless of how badly outclassed he was. Just thought this was a decent little scrap. :bbb Hearns is the man. |
Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
Minchillo was obviously a step down from Hearns, Duran and McCallum, but he was no joke in the ring; and wins over Hope and Benes among others prove that point.

Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
Watched this recently, Hearns won it handily but credit to Minchillo who even though he was clearly outgunned he never stopped trying, Hearns showed his skills and Michillo showed his resiliency and his toughness in a decent albeit one sided fight.

Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
Yeah he was tough as nails, the epitome of a "solid" fighter.Just didn't quite have the awkward hard to predict rhythm someone like Vito had to help close the gap against top-tier fighters with more physical ability, power and\or skill.
A fight with Vito would have been a classic. |
Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
Out of his three stoppage losses (five in total) only one was "legit." Two of them were down to injuries, and McCallum TKO'd him in the thirteenth round. He lasted the distance against both Hearns and Duran.
I agree about the solid fighter comments. Minchillo was no world beater, but he was a tough bastard. |
Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
It could actually be viewed as a testament to Hearns' durability. He took some pretty hard shots from Luigi every now and then.
I still maintain the position that although Tommy definitely didn't have an iron chin, he wasn't as fragile as some people make him out to be. |
Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
Tommy was no Amir Khan. He could take a dig and had massive heart.
He could be stunned and finished as well. 6/10 0: Khan 10: Villasana |

I completely agree with you, But thinkin about it I believe McCallum would have given him a hard time..... Minchillo would have had a hard against Curry. I see Curry knockin him out. |
Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
McCallum stopped him.

And you're right when talking chins my all time best have always been McCullough and Hagler but Villasana's was every bit as good. Fenech was at his physical peak at featherweight and despite his bad hands had a reasonable punch and killer accumulation there and Villasana was on the receiving end of heaps. Despite that and being generally physically manhandled Villasana wasn't once staggered, stunned or even perturbed by what Jeff landed (the only bloke that Fenech fought at that weight who wasn't from memory). Not to mention Nelsonx2 and Antonio Esparagoza not being able to even slightly hurt him. He was a tough cunt thats for sure. |
Re: Thomas Hearns vs. Luigi Minchillo
Griffo; no worries, it's a great scrap, eh? :good
Jeff was briefly stunned but came firing back! Some great exchanges. |
