How highly would you rate Carlos Monzon's middleweight reign?
Once he grabbed the titles from Nino Benvenuti in 1970 in a cracking fight, he went on to defend the title's numerous times.
He lost the WBC middleweight belt by facing Jose Napoles rather than Rodrigo Valdez, however, he went on to beat Valdez twice. He consistently defended against stellar opposition and didn't lose a fight in that period. He fought and beat the likes of Emile Griffith, Rodrigo Valdez, Bennie Briscoe, Nino Benvenuti, Denny Moyer, etc. Of course you'd be insane to not rate this reign of dominance quite highly, but what's your personal opinion on this? Do you think there was ever a middleweight reign greater? Thoughts? |

Mindblowing. I probably have this guy in my top 15-20 all time, maybe better but I cba thinking about it.
I put him above Marvin Hagler. |

I love his consistency the most, though. Regularly fought top opposition and won each time out. |

Well, I'm not sure...........I mean, he didn't even fight Robert Allen once.

Regularly fought top 3ish opposition. He didn't pick from the bottom half of the division like Holmes often times would. Everything was top notch to what was available to him, same with Napoles and Gavilan, Hagler.

It's very good, I do think Hagler beat better opposition, but Monzon beat the best of his time

Re: How highly would you rate Carlos Monzon's middleweight reign?
Monzon had the greatest middleweight reign ever, and one of the best of all time. He capped it of uniquely, that being by retiring unbeaten as champion. That evil woman killer.

Yeah, pretty good.

Re: How highly would you rate Carlos Monzon's middleweight reign?
As about a dominant run as anyone for his period.
Would have liked to see him fight Rodrigo Valdez sometime in 1974, rather than an undersized and old Jose Napoles. And Carlos could have picked off a faded Bob Foster in early-1974, which would have cemented his greatness. Have to be honest though, Carlos looked like a 'stiff-board' versus Tony Licata at Madison Square Garden. |
