Was reading a book earlier and it said "Rumour had it Joe Gans dropped Dempsey in sparring"

Any truth to it?

Sparring is upside down world, a lightweight and middleweight knock down and beat up the world heavyweight champ, Dempsey fights big black men.....upside down world it is

Anything can happen in boxing/sparring but yea I doubt it

No. Dempsey was 15 fucking years old when Gans died of TB. Simply did not happen.

Oh come on! Dempsey was riding the rails as a 6 year old, fighting in tough mining towns against tough miners, some of them out-weighing mordern heavyweight by up to 100lbs, and he generally remained unbeaten...he would have stepped in to give Gans a workout in a flash.

I hope this doesn't get me banned , but I believe the Joe Gans referred to is the gentleman on the right of this photo. ie Panama Joe Gans, but you knew that didn't you Hamish?

I dont think there are many stories of Dempsey being floored in sparring ,it seems most went out of their way to avoid making him unduly upset. According to Larry Gains, he punished the respectful ones , but he crucified any that got adventurous.

Tate was used for strength
Jamaica Kid for brawling
Gans for speed .

BTW. Gans beat Dempsey in 1923 and Wills in 1927 .

I assumed we were talking about the Old Master, Joe Gans, not Panama Joe Gans, or Allentown Joe Gans, or Italian Joe Gans. So, yes, a boxer named Joe Gans probably did drop Dempsey.
