Jack Johnson's Proposed Defence Against Wells Vetoed By Government
 

Jack Johnson was being lined up to defend his crown against Bombadier Billy Wells at London's Olympia, but objections from religious leaders pushed the British Government to abort the plan.
Johnson was said to have been offered £8000 to take on Wells , an excellent purse to defend against Wells who was not much more than a novice.
