Ray Robinson was a slugger.......

.......just look at SRR's footage. He banged it away pretty often. The footwork was just part of his style of defense. I rate Robinson as a slugger with great athletic ring movement. :scaredas:

Re: Ray Robinson was a slugger.......

Robinson could pretty much do everything and if he needed to slug it out he could; Turpin/RobinsonII being an example.

Re: Ray Robinson was a slugger.......

After he slowed down or when forced to (such as by LaMotta, or when he sensed he could be losing the fight and needed to come back strong), he did, but prime Robinson was a boxer-puncher, not a slugger.

I agree with Senya. I regard him as an agressive boxer-puncher personally.

I define a slugger as any fighter who can punch real hard.
Robinson was one, and so much more.

So...Lennox Lewis was a slugger? :huh

To me, it has more to do with styles and mentality.

This thread should read 'Ray Robinson was also a slugger'.

Re: Ray Robinson was a slugger.......

I believe it is Reg Gutteridge 'The Big Punchers' where the author says he talked to Ray Robinson about his punch, and Ray always said he wasn't a puncher naturally. It was all due to his timing and accuracy that allowed him to catch his opponents by surprise and thus knock them down or out. Or using uncommon moves, such as throwing double and tripple hooks which was new for the time he fought at, and so his opponents weren't always ready for a repeated same punch.

Like I said, I use the word "slugger" to mean anyone who punches real hard.
I dont use it to describe a whole bunch of characeteristics that make up a style.

"Banger", "Puncher", "Slugger".

Maybe just another key to victory, good point.
But I mean those really hard combinations thrown toe to toe sometimes, mixing up hard single punches and huge hammering combinations.
Sometimes you can see that he uses his defensive style only when tryin to regain some stamina or recovering when hurt.

I tend to agree, must have had serious serious serious power at WW.

Don't like the choices in the poll though, don't feel right about picking either one.

Sure. Add another "serious" to my original quote if you like.
