George Foreman's 5 Fights in 1 Night
Just got done watching George Foreman's 5 fights in one night on youtube. I must say that is probably one of the worst things to ever happen to boxing, what an utter disgrace....

Re: George Foreman's 5 Fights in 1 Night
I love Foreman but this is probably the most disgraceful thing I have ever seen in the boxing ring. I'd rather see Tyson bite Holyfield again.
For example he stops a guy in the 2nd round then proceeds to walk over to the fighter and starts punching him. Another example he has the ref stop the fight against the 3rd fighter because he was getting too tired. |

Re: George Foreman's 5 Fights in 1 Night
Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember this - vividly - as a live TV broadcast. At the time I felt a bit embarrassed for Big George. But in retrospect it's nothing that many other heavyweight champs and ex-champs haven't done before. Jim Braddock, smart enough to know he was past his prime, fought many paid exhibitions before losing his title to Joe Louis.
Arguably Joe Louis and Jack Johnson were forced by financial woes to stoop lower to make a buck in their later years. Muhammad Ali engaged in a slopfest against a Japanese martial artist who spent the entire "fight" scrabbling around on the canvas like a crab, kicking Ali in the legs, to avoid being hit. Reportedly the computerized Ali vs. Marciano hypothetical bout was rigged in favor of Marciano so that Ali could receive hush money for his legal defense fund while he was banned from boxing. Before you criticize these guys, consider how hard they work and how easily they are ripped off by predators in the business, having nothing left after years of fighting. Read up on the Diego Corrales for example (and, sure, read both Gary Shaw's and Jin Mosley's versions for balance, but I have no doubt that Jin's story is far more representative of what happens to most fighters). Whatever you think of Big George then and now, he's more charming and a helluva lot richer than most of us. |
Re: George Foreman's 5 Fights in 1 Night
I don't see what the big deal is?
He fought five times in 1 night...so what? The old timers used to do this all the time without batting an eye lid. Its disgraceful? disgraceful how? Because its against the norm? because its not commonly done? Hardly grounds for it to be labeld a 'disgrace' Nothing wrong about it, the only thing I didn't like was Foreman and Ali screaming at one another at the start, that was so obviously staged and reminded me of pro-wrestling. |
Re: George Foreman's 5 Fights in 1 Night
Okay, I've now watched all of it, I'm pretty sure some of that stuff was fixed or at least the ref and the fighters corners were persuaded to let the fights end early...very early, very very early.
Seemed very fishy to me. |

Re: George Foreman's 5 Fights in 1 Night
First of all, lots of fighters have taken on a bunch of guys one night. Second, it isn't easy, and George picked some decent guys. Third, it was entertaining and fun. Fourth, it did indeed show how Foreman would have problems with Ali in a 15 rounder, even if he changed his game plan. Fifth, it showed how psychologically torn up Foreman was at that time, and how Ali's taunts could really break him up.
