I don't think we should confuse 'smartly managed' with 'well protected'.
Clearly, a young Cassius Clay could fight, but he was protected to a degree
before fighting for the title.
Georeg Foreman, the same thing could be said.
Larry Holmes, on the other hand, had no 'big time' management behind him.
He was fighting to put bread on the table. He was 'not protected'.
