Whatever works for you. Don't look too much into it. Shadow boxing is different for everybody, so as long as you're putting some good work into it and focusing on more important aspects (stance, technique, defense, speed) you should see progress.
Personally, I follow a beat mostly when on jump rope. Or on the toilet for focus.
