I speculated that his reported diverticulitis led to blood poisoning as conditions involving the intestines can so often lead to septicemia, and septicemia can lead to major organ damage if it isn't stopped quickly enough. However, I've heard that his sister/Wlad verified it was colon cancer, but no credible articles seem to confirm that.
Chicago is where he died, though, and they do have a Cancer Treatment Centers of America campus there. I think colon cancer seems most likely now but I don't really know.
