Tunney was apparently considering going to Princeton at one point which suggests he was not without smarts, but as someone else has alluded to there were many who thought his intellect was something of an affectation. He regularly sat down with journalists with classical literature under his arm with book marks near the start of the book only for the same journalist to see him the next day with a completely different book marked near the end. Not saying he was not a clever guy but certainly played up to the image.
