I've always been OK at pullups(well for the last ten years anyway) and the way I learned to do them was by getting someone to spot me at first.You may need a bit of a push at first but you'll soon find that,similar to benching,the psychological boost you get from a spot will allow you to perform most of the movement yourself.
I know what it's like to not have a spotter but even if it's a member of staff at the gym,it will help you on your way.
I've never managed more than a set of 8 though,even though I can knock out a few sets.
