Canadian bantamweight Ivan Menjivar will face off against Urijah Faber at UFC 157, sources told UFC Central's Showdown Joe Ferraro.
The Salvador native Menjivar, who trains full-time at Montreal’s Tristar gym, is coming off a first-round submission of UFC newcomer Azamat Gashimov earlier this month at UFC 154 in Montreal.
UFC 157 will take place Feb. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
With a victory over Faber, Menjivar is all but guaranteed a shot at the interim UFC bantamweight championship, currently held by Renan Barao. Menjivar is 4-1 since joining the UFC’s 135-pound division.
Barao, who beat Faber this summer at UFC 149 in Calgary, is expected to face Michael McDonald in January.
Current champion Dominick Cruz is injured, and will be out for far longer than expected -- he just underwent his second ACL surgery and will not be returning to action anytime soon. Cruz last fought in October 2011.
UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who trains with Menjivar, underwent surgery in December on a second ACL injury and went nearly 19 months after his previous fight before returning on Nov. 17 to defeat Carlos Condit by unanimous decision.
Faber is 3-2 in his last five fights, with his only losses to Barao and Cruz.
This is actually a rematch. Their first fight (2006) ended in a DQ. You can see the fight ending illegal kick at 3:00 into this video. It appears to miss completely.
Should be a great fight, though. Both guys are typically exciting.
