Yeah, unless the event your training for is at high altitude it makes little sense to train there. Many elite cyclists train at sea level where the greater oxygen uptake allows them to train harder. Then they recover at high altitude or use a high elevation tent or sleeping bag to raise their red blood cell concentration. Unless your on Everest, high altitude won't raise the count so high as to turn it into sludge. The drug EPO given to cancer patients and misused by many endurance athletes will and has resulted in heart failure for those who dared push the effects that far.
