A lot of that happens because fighters don't know where to put there heads when fighting in close. Watch Archie Moore or James Toney; they fought inside all the time and never got cut, very very rare. Also, Chavez and McGirt.
If you are in close and square up, not only are you going to eat uppercuts like popcorn, your head is in a bad place. Get real sideways and your left shoulder in first.
