That sounds about right and it's a general rule for most gyms.
14oz on pads and bags then on to 16oz for sparring. Only using lighter gloves for sparring while close to peak/to a fight.
As for your knuckles.. have you used different gloves and still having problems? Use gauze on the area and then wrap your hand as usual. Hope it's not your jabbing hand.
