My personal belief is that Lamotta genuinely had the upper hand in this segment of the round. Some of those punches were blocked or slipped sure, but quite a few got in as well. There are few things more debilitating than getting punched, and it still bloody hurts when you get hit, no matter how good your chin is.
I don't know if Robinson was the defensive wizard he's made out to be. This is so open for debate, but my personal feeling is that although it may have been in the back of Ray's mind that Lamotta was winding down, I think it was a legitimate 'last hurrah' from Jake.
