Default Looks official: Povetkin not to train under Atlas now

Tonight Fightnews posted a report indicating that Al Povetkin will fight Ruslan Chagaev in August for the WBA world title. According to the article, Povetkin will not be trained by Teddy Atlas.

Check it yourselves. No bullshiting on my part here...I'm just reporting what's written on Fightnews.

I guess this annoucement signals that the Atlas-Povetkin relationship is terminating.

Actually it says that the reason is because Povetkin wants to train in Europe and Atlas can't re-locate at the moment due to ESPN2 commitments. But there does not seem to be an official "termination."

Povetkin would probaly be better off without him anyway.

You misunderstood it kenmore.
Last week there were photos of Atlas and Povetkin training. Atlas just confirmed Povetkin will fight Chagaev in August 27th. Why would he confirm a fight for a boxer he just terminated working with?

The truth is in between. Atlas is still training Povetkin, just not for this fight because Povetkin wants to stay in Europe.

The bigger question is, why would Atlas not train Povetkin for the biggest, most important fight of Povetkin's life? That just make sense. My hunch is that the explanation for Atlas's absence is a subtle, face-saving way of signaling the end of the relationship.

I'm not making a judgment pro or con about whether Atlas is right for Povetkin. But I do believe Teddy won't be in Povetkin's corner in the future.

It's true that if Atlas is Povetkin's trainer then he should be training him to fight Chagaev. So you're quite likely on to something here.

Atlas will take credit for Povetkin's victory, regardless of his level of actual involvement.

It's so silly that Atlas ever regained any "relevance" as a trainer.

Avoiding Klichko for all this time was pointless. Alex did not learn anything he already did not know. Only acceptable scenario is beating Chagaev, hopefully and fighting Vlad next.

Avoiding Klitschko was probably the right decision. If they had fought, Klitschko would have brutally kayoed Sasha and possibly ended his career. Now, as a result of waiting, Sasha will win the WBA world title by beating Chagaev. In the end, Sasha's stature, marketability, and fighting skill will all increase. None of this would have happened if Sasha had been rushed into the Klitschko fight.
