Fury-Chisora, a good British heavyweight battle.

I had it 10-2 for Fury.

Ruslan Chagaev MD12 Nikolay Valuev

This is an interesting and underated fight. Chagaev is giving up 90lbs in weight, ten inches in reach and a foot in height - that's an interesting combination when you're after a guys title.

Valuev starts the fight on a weird half-backfoot with Chagaev circling. Chagaev's plan is basically to avoid prolonged contact, to engage often for very short periods, raids. He keeps Valuev beautifully off-balance with small moves making it very difficult for the giant to get set, then launches his jab or straight on the outside and a variety of winging punches on the inside against a big, undefended target.

He starts of counter-punching for the main part, but is soon leading off slips and ducks, Chagaev has good head-movement. This combination, married to a good technical guard, keeps Valuev from landing a combination until the tenth round. Always a little vulnerable to uppercuts, Chagaev makes the size difference work for him here, keeping out of the way of that punch for a change. Pouncing suddenly from new angles he really makes Valuev look pretty awful.

The rounds Valuev wins (and there are a few) is generally off pressure and persistence but he never eally bares down on Chagaev, he never really gets to own him for any kind of stretch, in part this is earned as Chagaev is being clever about his raiding strategy. That raiding does cost him in the later rounds however, as Valuev, fighting more aggressively, scores with punches that go unanswered as Chagaev (mostly) avoids retaliation in situations where he probably could have landed.

Chagaev certainly looks better against Valuev than Haye did. He also never really reclaimed this form with his medical problems and injury right behind it. He genuinely looks a different fighter to the one that struggled for fitness versus Drummond and Skelton.

CHAGAEV: 1,3,4,5,6,7,9

VALUEV: 2,8,10,11,12

Chagaev & Shot Holyfield both looked better against Valuev than Haye did. I agree with your point about Ruslan's fitness problems against Drummond & Skelton, hence my insistence that Wlad didn't beat a Physically Prime Chagaev.

Yeah, there is no argument at all that Chagaev was primed when Wlad thrashed him. Still a great performance from Wlad. Maybe his best.

Lately for some reason I've made a concerted effort to watch all those tabboo fights that I never wanted to see........the ones where one fighter lost his life or nearly did. I watch them not for some sick voreuristic reason but for the historical reference, and in the possible belief that my watching the fight simply furthers the word of their effort, ultimately tragic as it my be. I will speak of it after all, and perhaps in the retelling by me and many others will their efforts have meaning for others beyond the obvious sadness.

Here is my scorecard; it was a bad hometown decision.

1: Quiroga 10-9
2: Akeem 10-9
3: Akeem 10-9
4: Akeem 10-9
5: Quiroga 10-9
6: Akeem 10-9
7: Akeem 10-9
8: Even 10-10
9: Quiroga 10-9
10: Quiroga 10-9
11: Akeem 10-9
12: Akeem 10-9

116-113 Akeem

Bowe - Holyfield 3

Holyfield 10-9
Even
Bowe 10-9
Bowe 10-9
9-9 even (Deduction against Bowe for lowblows)
Holyfield 10-8
Bowe 10-9

66-66 after 7

Stopped in the 8th, Holyfield boxed well early but there was clearly something wrong from as early as the 3rd. Hepititus? Probably.

Benn - Eubank 2

1.Benn 10-9
2.Benn 10-9
3.Benn 10-9
4.Benn 10-9
5.Eubank 10-9
6.Eubank 10-8 (deduction for lowblow)
7.Even 10-10
8.Benn 10-9
9.Benn 10-9
10.Benn 10-9
11.Eubank 10-9
12.Eubank 10-9

115-113 Benn

Lot of scrappy work but Benn was landing the more crisp effective blows early, lot of Eubanks shots were missing, his timing seemed to be off. Thought Benn won quite clearly, the rounds Eubank won on my card were close rounds that could have gone either way, not sure what the judges saw.

Default Re: the what fights did you watch today\scorecard thread.

just rewatched reid vs calzaghe

R-C

1: 9-10 not much happened but joe got off a couple of clean combos and fought well behind the jab
2: 9-10 very good ring generalship by joe, slips a lot of reid's counter shots.
3: 9-10 joe dominating behind his jab, hand and head movement too quic for reid to get a foothold.
4: 9-10 joe in control here, flashy combos and some good counter jabs. reid getting flustered.
5: 10-9 reid timing joe much better in this round, slipping and landing good shots.
6: 10-9 scrappy round, reid displays better ring generalship and his punches seem more effective
7: 10-9 another scrappy round. joe held his ground better but reid still looks like the general in there and is landing the harder shots.
8: 8-10 clear joe round plus a point deduction to boot.
9: 10-9 reid looks a lot stronger than joe and is hitting him with well timed hard shots
10: 10-9 more of the same from reid with the harder cleaner punches and the superior defence.
11: 9-10 reid looked like the ring general but his defence was shockingly open to joe's right hand.
12: 9-10 good strong finish by joe, his bounce his back and he makes reid miss on the inside landind quick snappy combos.

Final score 112-115 calzaghe.
