Default Mayweather vs Peterson on May 5, 2012? Or Mayweather vs Khan?

Let's go through what we know and what seems clear:

* Mayweather is not going to fight Sergio Martinez on May 5, 2012. That was stated in a new article on The Scene

* Mayweather just ran down Alvarez, Cotto and Guerrero in the last few days

* Pac-Floyd isn't happening on May 5, 2012

So, who's left?

Lamont Peterson

This the Golden Boy/Team Floyd plan? If so, what will Amir Khan think?

Or, could it be...

Amir Khan himself fighting Mayweather on May 5?

Actually I could see Mayweather fighting Amir Khan if Pacquiao doesn't happen. Bargan-wise, Khan coming off a loss makes it easier for Mayweather to throw short money at him, and Khan is still seen as a viable opponent. He did it with Judah, I don't see why not with Amir.

Good point, good point.

Khan is still in the picture here.

Not sure how bankable the fight is after Peterson (not to mention Prescott) was done with Khan, but maybe Team Floyd is thinking you better get something out of Khan now before he becomes even more devalued.

I think once the Peterson-Khan appeals process is figured out, then we may find out who Mayweather and Pac are fighting shortly thereafter.

This seems to be the last domino to fall.

If Pac doesnt get Cotto i see PBF vs Cotto.

If not maybe it is going to be Khan.

Then Pac will face Peterson and Peterson will face Khan after that fight.

I think the Peterson-Khan appeal is a forgone conclusion. The IBF situation is resolved and Khan says he'll never fight for them again, and the WBA president made his decision for an immediate rematch without any formal review, and given Peterson's appeal, I doubt they'll still force the rematch.

Khan's has a few choices, but nothing as tempting as mega fight with Floyd. If Floyd is serious about not fighting Pac in late May, I think he'd rather fight the smaller fighter in Khan than the JMW's in Alvarez or Cotto. Peterson would be a touchy ppv sales-wise. Peterson has respect in the boxing community, but he's an unknown to the general public, nor does he have a personality to engage with Floyd for a build up. He's too quite and nice.

Yeah, Cotto is still in play. But Floyd just dissed him. Not necessarily the best way to build up an opponent.

Yep, I'm starting to lean towards this possibility myself. Not that I want to see it, necessarily, but just that it very well could happen.
