Maybe not for his era, but I think that if you saw a fighter today who fought with Dempsey's style, you'd probably call him a crude fighter. He did a lot of things that trainers tell their fighters not to do, but was able to be very successful on the basis of guts, natural talent and pure aggression.

you've never watched a dempsey fight have you? dude was not crude, he was good at parrying shots, slipping punches and master at brutal infighting at a savage pace. Wlads absolute cryponite is an infighter that's aggressive, powerful, fast. Wlad cannot fight on ther inside and wouldn't be able to keep Dempsey at bay.

He also jumped in off-balance, often threw caution to the wind and left himself off balance to be picked off by counters (which he generally avoided because he just happened to be quicker and have better reflexes than most of his opponents). Crude might not completely be the right word, but you're making it sound like he fought like Nicolino Locche or perhaps Rafael Marquez or someone like that, when his modern day analog is probably something closer to Roman Gonzalez or Edwin Valero, both of whom have been called crude from time to time (although quite obviously Dempsey mastered that style much more than the modern folks, although on the other hand actually being smaller than most of his better opponents proved to be an advantage for him because of that style).

And before someone says it, yes I realize Marquez and Locche fought nothing alike. That's just two different ways of interpreting the style that was being described. I think everything in that description is accurate, but he still was just so awkward sometimes that it almost looked like he didn't know what he was doing, even though he was a master at it.

I also don't think just about anyone would argue that Wlad is a lot better than Jess Willard ever was.

just like no one would argue that Dempsey is far better than Brewster/Sanders and Purrity put together.

Dempsey was far better defensively than Valero, the only recent fighter who has a style somewhat reminiscent of Dempseys was early Tyson....I agree he sometimes came in off balanced winging shots but the guys chin was Damn good and he often fought sloppier vs opponents he knew couldn't hurt him or outfox him vs better technicians like Tunney you'll notice he didn't throw as much caution to the wind. and it'll take more than a 1-2 from Wlad to stop him, not to mention Dempsey was very skilled at getting inside on bigger guys, if he gets inside wlads range with his ferocity and Wlads total lack of infighting ability I see a Dempsey KO.
