Joe was a throwback from another era. Even for the 70s. He just plain loved to fight. Frazier would have fought every month if he couldve. His eye situation just wouldnt allow it.

Tonight i did find some v.good quality film-footage of teh Smokey Joe VS Jumbo Cumming fight from 1981.
Normally this fight is only viewable in awful picture quality. Frazier was beyond-shot And proper rusty here, But IMO he should of won this fight 6-4 in Rounds like my scorecard. I did think it was valiant Shot Frazier @ age 37 was taking big punches from a strong bodybuilder for 10 Rounds, what a true warrior he was. |

Foreman Hook,
Thanks for sharing the fight tape. I love Smokin Joe, but he got a gift draw that night in Chicago. I remember him sitting on his stool just before the 7th round, huffing and puffing, with a big roll around his waist. Joe had no business being in that ring, out-of-shape and 20 lbs. overweight, at 230 lbs. As for Jumbo Cummings, a muscle-bound guy with limited boxing experience. Though he had a 15-1-0 record, he had only been a professional for a little over 2-years. And in his 15 wins, only 3 of the fighters had winning records. Clearly a manufactured fighter, nothing more than a big strong guy with limited boxing skills. |
