I'm not even sure if Martinez would have racked up an early lead given the fact that young Hop started faster and was much more active than the 2000's version of him.

this what happens when I post whilst pissed. If matt could time martinez and catch him with the straight right, it's almost certain that hopkins would. I had matt winning the fight going into the tenth and I think he was mega effective that night. Hopkins could actually take martinez to school. I suppose martinez can step up a gear and take some rounds on workrate but hopkins should have his number. This is my sober (surprisingly not hung over |

![]() When martinez steps up he throws am awful lot of accurate hard eye catching power shots. I think hopkins wins 10-2 or 9-3. So far i'm happy that robinson, hopkins and apostoli beat him. |

Martinez would give Hopkins problems plenty of problems in the first 4 rounds, Vanderpool built up an early lead against Hopkins too. |

i agree and i see it as closer than lufcrazy. martinez has plenty of holes in his game but if we look at hopkin's loses on film, they are all to athletically gifted individuals who used physical advantages to either narrowly edge a win (taylor x2, calzaghe) or prevent hopkins technical brilliance from becoming a factor (jones). regardless of whether you feel he won or lost these (I gave taylor both by 2 points, calzaghe by 1) they all troubled him with speed, movement and workrate. martinez has the qualities to put on at least a respectable showing against hopkins

Martinez could certainly give lot of trouble to the older middleweight Hopkins circa DLH-Taylor fights, but that Hop is not a great middleweight anymore.Even though i'm not a fan of the ancient light-heavy version either, that weightjump gave him a new lease of life for a while....the version that closed out his middleweight days was Hopkins at his lowest level since being a novice. At times it was like watching weight drained latter reign Eubank during some of his lesser performances...
Better to look at mid-late nineties Hopkins against Martinez. |

the hopkins of the lipsey fight then? more athletic, little less crafty. certainly a much more entertaining fight. that right hand lead was still present which would likely be his best weapon against sergio

Yeah, it's true that he wasn't as crafty in his physical prime. He didn't really learn to spoil well consistently until he got old.Something that doesn't come up often enough when Hopkins is talked about for my liking.People sometimes tend to combine the two versions together(me included).
