None of that 'trash talking' backfired, it was intended for the media.

Smokin Joe was comfortable with himself, and was confident that
he would win, he didn't need any other motivation.

Muhammad Ali, on the other hand had to motivate himself through
his own talking. This was Joe Frazier he was fighting.
