Default Ayub Kalule vs. Steve Gregory

December 16, 1979

Newly crowned WBA Light-Middleweight Champion, Ayub Kalule defends his Title
for the first time, versus American Steve Gregory.

Ayub Kalue, 1-month shy of his 26th birthday, will defend his crown on
Friday Night at the Brondby Hallen Hall in Denmark. A crowd of 4500
are expected be in the arena, to support the Ugandan Warrior. Unbeaten in 31 bouts,
the Copenhagen resident is a heavy favorite to defend his title
that he won only 6 weeks ago over Japan's Masashi Kudo.

His Challenger is American Steve Gregory, the #3 WBA Light-Middlweight. Based out of
Ohio, United States, the 24 year-old 5' 10" boxer is undefeated in 22 bouts with a
fine record of 20-0-2 (14 KO's).

Not much is known of the American, as his record has been built up
with wins over club-fighters and no-name opponents. Gregory does
come into the bout with some presence, as his Manager/Trainer is
the well-respected Angelo Dundee. Gregory is also a sparring partner
for World Champion Sugar Ray Leonard.

Some have suggested, that Steve Gregory is being sent over to Denmark,
to test Ayub Kalule as a future opponent for Ray Leonard. Gregory has jumped
up near the top of the WBA ratings, without defeating a world class opponent,
and many feel that he will be completely over-matched by the superior skilled Champion.

Boxing sources say, that Gregory is a good technical boxer, with quick
footwork and smart defensive skills. In the few sparring sessions here,
he has shown to an aggressive fighter, but does not possess any real
power in his punches, though his Manager Angelo Dundee says that
Steve has an overhand right with the 'Thrust of a Truck Piston'

Manager/Trainer Angelo Dundee stated that Gregory will surprise people,
and he plans to have his fighter go straight at the Champion.

Ayub Kalule is to receive a fight purse of $80,000.
Steve Gregory is to receive a fight purse of $40,000.

Also on the card, Former World Lightweight Champion Ken Buchanan goes against
Charlie Nash for the European Boxing Union Light-Welterweight Championship.
The winner of the bout will awarded a chance at the World Lightweight Championship
versus Jim Watt.

World-rated Weltwerweight Joergen Hansen in a 10-Round bout versus Joseph Pachler.
World-rated Light-Welterweight Hans Henrik-Palm in an 8-round bout versus Henry Rhiney.

1978 World Amateur Light-Flyweight Champion Stephen Muchoki goes in a 6-round preliminary bout.

Thanks Mr. Jofre,,,

Steve Gregory,,,,,,,,basically a 'glorified club-fighter' who beat
20 'B' level no-names to get a WBA rating.

Had an amateur record of 298-15
Won '3' Ohio State Amateur Titles (1975/1976/1977)

Jumped from nowhere, to #3 WBA Light-Middleweight in November 1979,
without ever beating a ranked or world class fighter.

Had the backing of Angelo Dundee, and the badge of being one of
Sugar Ray Leonard's sparring partners in 1979.

Was basically beaten all over the ring by Ayub Kalule. Steve was floored
in the 1st round, by the first hard punch Ayub Kalule threw. A straight left hand
to Gregory's front left shoulder.

Though it was pretty much a walk-over, Ayub was disappointing, as he
failed to Knock-out this over-matched club fighter.

Later it was revealed, that Steve Gregory broke his left hand in the 1st round,
when he bounced a left hook high off the head of Ayub Kalule at the 1:43 mark.

I know it's hard playing connect the dots in boxing and having everything conveniently fall into place, but here goes; I recall Angie being real high on the guy. Sure he always backed his guy but Angie could definately evaluate talent. My take was or is that Gregory was a real real good gym fighter. But he was a guy that did not transfer that to fight night in the ring.

But someone smarter than I am will have to verify that because he was a hard guy to find out a bunch on. That Dundee association changes a lot of things and he was too old to be wasting his time on guys.

Zad,,,,

Correct on Steve Gregory,,,,,,,,,a real good guy,,,,,,,,,who was a 'gym champion'.

Had 'good pedigree' as he was an excellent amateur who was voted 'Amateur Boxer of the Year' in Ohio.
His skill level was high as an amateur, and bigger things were
expected from him.

Not Top 10 quality, but was good enough to be in the lower portion of the Top 25.

On the fight,,,,,,there was none.

Ayub Kalule, more-or-less, did a 15-Round sparring session 'shut-out' number on him.

Scorecards;
Referee; Tony Perez............149-135 (14-1-0 in Rounds)
Judge; Ove Ovesson............150-135 (14-0-1 in Rounds)
Jude; Stanley Christodoulou..150-137 (12-0-3 in Rounds)

After the bout, Mogens Palle, Ayub Kalule's manager/promoter, informed the Boxing Press that Kalule has a planned
defense here in Denmark, in late-January 1980 versus the #8 WBA-ranked Ruben Hector Pardo of Argentina.

Palle also stated, that he would like to bring Ayub Kalule to America. We might have a bout in early-March 1980
and on National Televsion. The opponent could be either the former WBA Welterweight Champion Angel Espada or newly
crowned U.S.B.A. Light-Middleweight Champion #6 WBA-ranked Nick Ortiz.

The fight was never really eftertaining. Beside from the fist round when Gregory was on the floor, nothing really happened and Kalule won as he pleased.

Yes,,,,,several times in that bout, Ayub went all-out to try and score a
knock-out over a stationary Steve Gregory,,,,,,,and he could not do it....

I'm sure Steve Gregory must have said to himself,,,,,'I'm letting this guy
try to knock me out,,,,,,,,,,,and he can't.'

Kalule was never a knock out puncher. His strong hand was his right with plenty of hurtful right jabs and right hooks, but his left was a featherduster. How on earth he knock out supposedly granite chinned Ho Joo with one left cross I will never know.

To be fair,,,,,,,,,

Steve Gregory did break his left hand in the 1st Round versus Ayub Kalue.

Both Angelo Dundee, and cornerman John Johnson did confirm that Gregory did snap
a bone in his left hand.

Not that it would have made any difference in the outcome of the fight,
but he could only use the left as a paw and a slap. It was useless as a sharp jab and/or left hook.

As for success, Gregory did score with a couple of slashing rights in the 12th Round, that nicked Kalule above the
left eye.

His best punch landed, a bomb of an overhand right at the 2:15 mark of the 13th
Round. That punch would have dropped most 'normal' 154 pounders.

Ayub Kalule had a 'near granite chin'.

Mike G,

After the one-sided loss to Ayub Kalule, Steve Gregory did hang in the Top 10
of the WBA for another year with 4-wins.

He got to 24-1-2 and a #8 WBA-ranking, then went to South Africa in March 1981, and got
KO'd in 3 by Top Ranked Knock-Out Artist, Charlie Weir.

After that loss, he dropped out of the Top 10.

Was Sugar Ray Leonard's sparring partner in May 1981, and helped Sugar Ray prep for
his bout with Ayub Kalule, for June 1981.

He won a couple of more bouts, and got to 26-2-2, but then was stopped in
successive bouts in 1982 (KO'd in 3 by Tony Ayala Jr.) and (KO'd in 3 by Nino La Rocca).
