.true story, when i first started training boxing I was around 148-150 had been a month so I started sparring and I was stronger and even faster than guys my size
...My trainer Merhav Mohar, you can go on youtube and check him out i think his record was 18-2(16 kos) as a pro also an isreali kickboxing champ, anyway he was like what are you gonna do when you can't overpower someone? He forced me to spar this guy who was younger I was 21 he was 18 but had 20-25 pounds on me a lil less skilled but anyway we had to do 5 rounds(3 minute pro rounds, 30 second rest) and the first 3 rounds I could only throw a jab to the face and Just body shots, what he was teaching me was how to break down a larger guy, if i hit him with a powershit which I did a few times cuz of all the pressure he said I would have to spar him and I wanted no parts of that, so the first round was hell, the 2nd was hard, by the 3rd round it felt like he was breaking down, by round 4-5 when I could throw power shots I was landing overhand rights, double and triple right hands, even landed a 4 punch combo that shocked me and I worked the kid eye was all swole and fucked up it was a great learning experience... .alot of people on this board dont know what it takes to be in the ring, never have put on a pair of gloves and went mano y mano...I've been in contact sports off and on my whole life and from experience, I did Tae Kwon do a while, wrestled two years in high school, ran cross country in high school, and ran track from 7th grade-10th grade....by far boxing is the hardest sport I have done, and for the record the boxing ring is the loneliest place I have ever been and I cant respect anyone who degrades guys who are pro and put their life on the line and call them bums and tomatoe cans, hell they wouldnt last a full 3 minutes |

Yep lots of great fighters get stick and get called bums which is ridiculous when they are easily the number 1 or 2 guy of a division (I'm not gonna name names)

I started boxing early and I remember one time I got a wild hair or something and smarted off with my trainer. His name was Henry Wilson (rip) and at the time he had to be about 57 yrs old. He told me that he would beat my ass and I laughed bc he was old. I was decent at the time and slick. Long story short, that old man beat my ass. Had two uncles who boxed , and trained under him, and told me not to get in the ring with him but I didn't listen. Never seen an old man move like that. He humbled me. He was a great fellow.

This is not about being in the ring myself, but a 16-year-old bomb-throwing grade school drop-out on my amateur team in the early '80s who was in the 147-pound final for the N.Y. Golden Gloves Championship.
He was mobbed in the dressing room by reporters before the bout. His opponent was a 26-year-old Hungarian Freedom Fighter. They kept shouting: "Howya gonna beat a Hungarian Freedom Fighter; he stood up to Russian tanks!? "No Nazi can beat me!" |

Can't really think of any off hand that are worth telling.
When I was about 15/16 I had a boy from my gym who had always been heavier than me and as a result he used to go easy on me in sparring, pulling his punches. One summer I grew a lot and eventually we were around the same weight. In my gym, a 50 50 spar with two guys going all out was always referred to as "Flat out", or "Flat oot" as we would say in Scotland. Me and the other lad touched gloves and started the spar, he instantly drove me on the ropes and started teeing off with thundering hooks, left - right left right left right, with no real thought going into them. He was punching so franticly that I knew he would punch himself out (add to the fact that he wasn't fully fit). About 30 seconds went by and he had landed nothing clean. Never the less it must have seemed to on lookers like I was in trouble. As I had predicted, he was gassed and I piled the pressure on him for about a minute, catching him hard shots to the body but not really hurting him. With about 30 second left in the round, he got his breath back and came ploughing forward looking to get me again. I took a step back and fired a 1-2 right down the middle which caught him him clean, he paused on the spot, swaying for a milisecond before falling forward like a tree that had just been cut down, out cold. It was like an Ali-Foreman fight, only it took place in 1 round instead of 8. I Rope-a-doped in him one round. Sadly I've never showed punch power like that in the several years that's followed. Lucky shot i guess. |
