Froch Bute - a little overated?!

Ok, let me start this thread by making it absolutley clear that I loved the fight; it's been quite some time since I have been on my feet shouting at the TV during a fight! I loved the excitement, the atmosphere and I thought Carl Froch gave a punch perfect performance.

It was an exhilarating night and one I will remember for some time, and I'm sure it's also a fight I will almost certainly watch many times over the coming years.

BUT.................................

Are we just perhaps overstating just how amazing the result was?

Carl Froch is a really good boxer, and he arguably has the most impressive record of any British Super Middleweight, he has not ducked anyone, hard fight after hard fight, and always willing to go into the other man's backyard. But is it clear now that Bute was perhaps overated? Did his record, as some had suggested before the contest, perhaps make him look better than he is/was?

I think perhaps it's similar to Calzaghe's win against Lacy; Lacy was presented as this fearless brutal 'mini Tyson', but in hindsight he was clearly overated (although I take nothing away from Calzaghes performance).

The media are now talking about the Froch Bute win as one of the greatest; for me the Nigel Benn win over McClellan was in a different league.

I really don't want to come across as anti-Froch, trust me I most certainly am not, I am thrilled for him, loved the fight, and can't wait to see what he does next; but now that the dust has settled, is it really unreasonable to say that the win (not the performance itself) was not quite up there with the all time greats it's being described as?

Froch I thought was a tad lucky against Johnson. I scored it to the Cobra by a point but I could have easily seen a draw. Then Bute handles him completely, it wasn't really competitive.

Though I suppose Johnson's motivation for both fights can be questioned, I really do believe that he didn't fight at the same intensity in both encounters. He was well up for Froch (who himself didn't seem at his best) whereas in Canada he kind of just looked happy to pick up his paycheck. But who knows?

what has got my goat a bit, is after froch beat bute he is getting this kind of reaction, but when ward totally outclassed froch, it kinda got disregarded, after last week, this must put andre ward up there as one of the pound for pound fighters in the world, and must put that performance up there as the performance of 2011

I dont think Bute was expecting Froch to start as quick and strong as he did and maybe caught him a bit by surprise! also most other's when caught by the Bute special punch they crumble, Froch loved it, stood there infront of him the whole time with that steely determined look of 'it doesnt matter what you do im going to destroy you'

If anything Bute was overrated but we kinda knew that based on the fact he hadnt fought the calibre of opposition Froch had, Froch just bullied him.

Johnson was a totally different fighter in those two fights. He looked intimidated in the Bute fight, amazing when you consider the caliber of fighter hed faced before. Just wasnt able to pull the trigger, whereas his big wild right found a near permanent home on Frochs face in their fight

I agree. He landed quite a bit of Froch and even seemed to shake Carl at times. He just didn't seem to know when to throw against Bute. The fabled Johnson work-rate got left at home it seemed that night.

Combination of Froch getting his tactics right, Bute overlooking him slightly, and landing something solid in the second round that changed the pace of the fight so markedly.

It was a fantastic win. Hopefully Froch takes the rematch to prove he's superior all round.

I don't think Jeff Lacey was overrated, he beat guys, and he destroyed the last of a very solid great super middle weight in Robin Reid.

If you pitch Calzaghes 8 best wins against Frochs 8 best wins, Calzaghe has a better resume. Eubanks has a better resume, why is Carl Froch getting credit when he losers a fight? Boxing at the end of the day is about winning, like David Haye stated.

Calzaghe beat more proven super middle weights, Jermaine Taylor was a no mark at super middle weight, so was Arthur Abraham, Lucian Bute is a good fighter? But not really tried and tested.

Jean Pascal is Carl Froches best win, and 3 of Calzaghe oponents where better than Jean Pascal. Chris Eubanks, Bernard Hopkins even the 4 years older Bernard Hopkins, and I also think the shot Roy Jones would of beaten Jean Pascal? He is too much of a retard. How on earth do you get hit by Carl Froch n a reg? In my opinion real elite fighters with athletic ability, and above average toughness will beat Froch easy.

He is just too slow, the slowest champion pound for pound since Georege Foreman. Jermaine Taylor could of won, if his stamina was not so shit.....he was beating Froch easy until he suddenly started to fade, Froch is like one of them fuck Zombies off Residents evil for the play station 1.

Froch is a massive overachiever I give him credit for that.

Arthur Abraham did what at super middleweight before he fought Froch? Beat Jermaine Taylor he also did nothing, and move up to SMW because he was lazy in training.

Taylor's only win at the weight is over a shot Lacy who was able to put him down, I love that fight but I don't think it's one of Froch's top wins.

Not the 'ATG British win' some are making it out to be.

Absolutely brilliant display against a top 4 fighter. Bute was not all hype, he was a very good fighter.

Coupled with Froch being given no chance given in (and rightly so, he was seemingly outmatched in most departments) elevates it to a higher level.

I'm afraid I'm still to see a Curry-Honeyghan-esque upset in my time.
