[quote=damian38;12996520]that would be a big step up for Szpila

tonight was the first time I ever saw this kind of Szpilka, cold and calculating, waiting for the right moment to strike

either that or he just wanted to add rounds to his resume[
/QUOTE]

Both are likely the case. Szpilka knows he can't be gun ho and he desperately needs more rounds. Also, the ref gave Basile every chance he could. Many refs would have stopped this fight after the third knockdown. Szpilka is fortunate Basile wasnt injured after that shot when Basile was down.

Like when his opponent was down? Well, maybe it was just an old habit from his hooligan days... just joking

Szpilka won and his style is entertaining for public. That is what counts for the moment, since I do not expect him to fight more dangerous opponents in about 5 next fights. So he is safe for a year or two.

However, I hoped he will present some kind of defence, especially after the accident with Saulsberry. His guard was still wide open, and when he was coming forward and missing right hook it was just asking for trouble - any opponent with some speed and skills would've countered him easily and put him down even with relatively weak punch.

Derric Rossy at the end of the month (maybe). This would be a good step up.

Szpilka said he was extremely disappointed with his showing, especially his accuracy (says only one punch landed clean in the spot he wanted) and said he forced his punches to much instead of letting it come naturally.

would be good to see szpilka in with derric rossy, as rossy has fought some of the top ten. ill wager, if the fight comes off, that this one will go longer than 5 rounds.

i do think its time for szpilka to test himself a little more. i worry for his defence, should he continue to fight this standard of opposition, as he will get into bad habits (not being tagged, learning his lesson, etc).

Here he is doing some kind of funny comedy duet with his girlfriend. So what does "mishu" mean in Polish?

Misu (pronounced like Michoo) literally means a teddy bear. But when refered to a man, Misu is basically a pet name kind of like honey or dear in English speaking countries.Sometimes it specifically refers to a lover, usuallly stocky, bearded and very loveable huggable, kind of a G, that ladies fall for....but comical, which is why Szpilka says over and over again, "don't call me Misu"

Why? He should motivate him during the fight!

Not so. Trainer Lapin was all over Szpilka in this fight. Szpilka also has an assistant trainer , Pawel Skrzecz who will chime in often. Skrzecz was an excellent fighter (silver medalist the 1980 Olympics) back in the day when Polish fighters were not allowed to turn pro

Thanks, Iz. That was a very articulate explanation, and now I know what the little skit is about.

Back in those days no eastern Europeans or Russians were allowed to turn pro. That's what all these endlessly hyped American "world" champs need to have an asterisk next to their so-called world championships. They never fought any black Africans or Cuban ex-pats either.
