John Ruiz vs. Floyd Patterson

Ugly style, but effective. Had a way of neutralizing more 'talented' opponents and making them fight down to his level.

Agree that Floyd would beat the living crap out of Ruiz. Floyd was way too fast, too powerful, too active, had plenty of pop, solid condition, and could fire blazing combos to the body and head that were unbelievable, and the best Ruiz could hope for would be to lose a wide decision.

The Quiet Man is so incredibly underrated. Strong, durable, cunning and clever... and a decent right hand to go along with a good inside game.

I think he beats every champ up to Louis, wins 1 out of 3 against Louis, and continues to beat every champ up to Liston... and that includes Patterson.

Exactly. We're talking two different classes of fighter here. An ATG, or borderline ATG, who held the HW championship vs. a glorified clubfighter who held a fractional belt and was maneuvered into undeserved title shot after undeserved title shot due to connections with a powerful promoter.

Seriously, the fact that a fighter with as little ability as Ruiz held even a paper title is a disgrace to this sport, and that's even moreso the case when you consider he violated the rules against excessive holding in virtually every fight he had against world class comp - because he wouldn't have been remotely competitive without the illegal tactics!!!

I seem to remember a certain heavyweight out of Galveston who clinched every bit as often. And I would pick Ruiz over that guy, too. Just too big, too modern, too athletic.
