Davey Moore could have had a better career had he taken a longer road to a championship title. He never learned the things he needed to have a longer career.

I should say I favored him. People rated him on the Benitez fight where he lost conclusively over 15 rounds. He should have been favored against Moore. Funny thing is I always thought Duran was great, but I knew if he had a style of fight and things in his favor Duran would win. A guy 11 fights is not going to beat Duran. Duran beat Leonard when Ray had 25 or so fights, and then Ray learned how to be outside of the ring as well as inside to fight his fight, and he learned. But Davey Moore a good fighter, still was not the fighter Leonard was obviously.

Despite the odds he was put in against Duran too early. Odds are set for the casino/sports book to make money.
He could have used more seasoning. Anytime you can stop Benitez in 2 rounds. You've done something right. However Benitez had by than seen better days. While Moore had a lot of potential. I think his winning a championship so early in his career was more of a case of being in the right place at the right time, than anything else. I think with or without the loss to Duran he'd have lost to Buster Drayton, Lupe Aquino and John David Jackson. |

I think Davey Moore would have been a good top 10 Jr. Middle who was fun to watch regardless of the Duran fight. But that fight certainly didn't do him any favors. He could be busted up and out boxed, but he sure punched hard. I would have loved to have seen him fight John Mugabi or Julian Jackson. |

Lets not forget that Roberto had 'not' been 'super impressive' before that June 1983 bout.
The New York Newspapers were stating that the fight would be a 'borderline' mismatch, as a 32 year-old Duran would be 'mauled' by the vicious hitting 'Bronxite' Davey Moore. Plus, a $1,000,000 fight purse for Davey Moore helped too. |
