It wasn't really his ground and pound that was impressive in that fight, it was his control. He landed a handful of big shots, but his ground and pound was largely busy work so the ref didn't stand them up. You don't survive 300+ shots if the GnP is solid.

What bothers me more then anything is guys who can't land strikes when they have their man on their back. GSP is maybe the most rounded fighter in mma now days. I still like Sonnens ground and pound more though. Maybe its not the most brutal shots, but he can win fights with it.

I have to see that fight again it was one of the most impressive displays of ground and pound I have ever seen.

I'll reiterate:

I think you are confusing top control with GnP. Sonnen is great at holding people down and controlling them, but his GnP is pathetic, that's why he never TKOs anyone.

****ing hell. Where do people get this shit...?

Do you have any idea what a man looks like at 6'2" and 230lbs?

I'll give you a hint, he would not look like Anderson Silva.

Id be surprised if he was anything close to 215 come fight night. His frame is very lithe.

Anthony Johnson is 6ft 2in, same height as Anderson.

If I remember rightly, he weighed in at 196lbs vs Belfort.

Does Anderson really look any bigger in the cage with Belfort than Johnson did at the weigh-in?

Anderson really can't be far off 196 when he's in there I don't think. Definitely not 215 IMO.

Wait what? Doesn't GSP pretty much have to face Condit since Condit is interim champ?

I don't think it's that far fetched to say that Condit has a very good chance at beating GSP. Especially a GSP coming off of a bad injury and an extended time off.

At full fitness/sharpness/momentum, Condit would have next to no chance vs GSP. Look what Rory MacDonald did to Condit, in only MacDonald's 2nd ever UFC fight when he was only 21. GSP would dominate him with ease.

But I agree, the significance of coming off such a bad injury and being out the cage for so long cannot be overlooked. It could be crucial in GSP losing to a fighter he would not lose against otherwise. If that happens, I hope Georges gets a rematch. I have long been against pitching guys coming off 1 year+ injury lay-offs right back in against the toughest guy available. It causes results that are more about that than about the actual fighters and their styles, one guy being way off 100% when the fight occurs.

I feel you, and everyone else that thinks that the first two rounds were dominated by Rory, needs to rewatch that fight. Rory landed takedowns, but Condit was more active from his back than Rory was on top. Rory won the rounds, but they were far from one sided.

And GSP was everything that a 21 year old, 2-fight veteran MacDonald was, and so so much more in every conceivable way.
