Default Am I not pushing myself enough?

I have recently started wearing a garmin gps/heartrate monitor for running. Last week I decided to wear it when curcuit training to see what my hear rate would be.

anyway, my average for the session (45min roughly) was 142 bpm

This is quite a bit lower than I expected, I thought with the intensity I would be in the 160+ region.

Now I am beginning to wonder if I pushed myself enough?

I tend to do 1 minute skipping then 1 minute in another exercise (pushups / burpees etc).

I dont rush them, as my goal is to get through a minute without stopping, which I cannot do with any of them. I normally need to break once and try to keep it to 3 or 4 seconds.

My idea was to increase this once I could do each exercise for 1 minute to 1minute 30, then 2 min etc etc.

Should I carry on with this plan or should I really be nailing each interval to failure?

Thanks

You're probably over analyzing this. Who cares about a number?
It's gonna be different for everybody.
As long as you're putting a real effort into it, and gradually pushing yourself further each week or month - you'll be fine. Nobody here is in a position to assess your general fitness level anyway, and if we say you're doing too much or doing too little, it's not gonna change how far you can push yourself anyway. So why worry about what the machine says?

That's a good point. I guess as long as I am going to failure each time and not ending each 60s slot with more to give in my mind I am pushing away just fine.

I realised also that I took two breaks in there (only to go fill my water bottle) which would have lowered my average some.

You're right though, to be honest the number is only important for me when running and even then it's more about pace to be honest.

Just wanted others opinions thats all. Sport is quite new to me ha ha!!!!

Thanks!!!

Well, good for you for taking this on. It will be a lot of fun, with many benefits.

I personally find it's human nature to add structure as you go along and progress. Meaning, people start off with no structure and just do what they feel is right (or fun). Then eventually, they challenge themselves more and begin to factor in time, intervals and effort.

So that's my advice. Just have fun for now, do what feels right.
Then use that as a baseline to build upon.

Cheers!
