Default Do you think Judo is somewhat a misused martial art in terms of MMA ??

I was just watching some Judo contests in the Olympics.....

Donīt you think sometimes is too much wrestling and no Judo in MMA....? Fighters should learn more Judo ??

A lot of times when I see fighters clinching on the cage I canīt help but think that if it was a Judo fighter he would be able to get the takedown easily in those position.....Karo Parisyan was a master at this, and though wrestling is very well used by every MMA fighter around, Judo is somewhat underused, misused IMO to defend takedowns and to get them......

Whatīs your opinion?

I was watching it myself and started to wonder how to implement it in the UFC without the gi. I thought it was under used myself but it must be a massive transition without the gi but I've only watched Judo once so maybe their is a lot more to it than I seen.

Agree

While Judo isn't exactly be nine in MMA its not front line either , and its a very very useful tool to have in MMA , when you lock up with a Judo guy and go sailing through the air from an undertook standing !!! , u kind of go " **** , did he really just throw me from that position " ??

Out of the very top gyms id be interested to know how many actually have official Judo coaches

Hettes Is the only one recently I can remember using Judo in recent years which says a lot I'd say. Even Akiyama hasn't looked to bothered to use it when I've seen him.

I agree, I've been enjoying the judo in the Olympics and I was thinking the same thing.

How many judo throws have you ever seen used in the UFC? You could count them on one hand.

90 % of the stuff they teach you in Judo, you can't use effectively against a real opponent or in a fight. Yeah, maybe some bum on the street with no fighting experiance you could do a hip toss ( O Goshi) on. You learn armbars really well, thats is about it.

There are so many Judo schools in Europe and Asia, it is very popular overseas, unlike the United States. They don't produce any fighters though.

I agree, BJJ was learned in Japan by the Gracies. And they just worked on the submisions aspect of Judo. Judo plays a part in some great fighters like the Gracies and Fedor. Sambo is also an adaptation of Judo and Fedor was also a Judo black belt.

in Judo they can have excellent transition from the throw into the submision. Also many of the hold downs can be used for ground and pound.

I think is a bit hard to say this as a good fact since very few guys with some Judo experience tried MMA seriously......

IMO can be very useful when the fighter has a background of it....

Parysian utilized his judo better than anyone imo and he wasnt exactly the best judoka. Its a shame Ishii doesnt look to use his judo more.

Judo without the gi looks very similar to Greco-Roman Wrestling. A lot of the trips, throws, and take downs are similar.

Here is a clip of a freestyle wrestler with a blue belt in bjj(no shirt) rolling with a judo brown belt.

Problem with Judo is that they throw and land without worrying about the opponent taking their back.

For MMA, they have to throw and land immediately in side position, not just throw and expose their back.

Best Judo practitioner in MMA is without a doubt IMHO Ronda Rousey. The number of throws and takedowns she hits every fight are phenomenal. She goes for combination throws until one lands. Brilliant stuff.

Judo is in MMA and will continue to be used more and more. Trips and throws are becoming the norm but they are very circumstantial. Alot of people aren't going to work themself into a position to get a throw or trip which can finish wrong. A good old takedown and work for the transition is the safest option but I'm a big believer in Judo given that people often tangle up, fall off balance etc You often see Judo practioners take a huge advantage of such situations.

Greco has better throws, BJJ better submissions.
