Of course we'll claim him if we can

Im not trying to oversell him but he was the irish, british, european, commonwealth, and world champion when he retired. Not a bad achievement by anyones standards. Won and lost against the likes of terry allen and jackie paterson

That's what I was thinking when I looked him up, although can we really claim him? I mean he grew up in Canada and that is where he learned to box

The UK (England) claims Fitzsimmons on birth. Lennox Lewis is another * having learned to box in Canada. So I think you have a claim.

Not the greatest, but Jimmy Warnock is one of the better fighters from the north of Ireland (born before 1922). He had the "Indian Sign" on the great Benny Lynch, whom he beat twice (something no one else ever did)

So I would say a Northern Irish fighter (although they do not have to of been in Ulster) would need to be born on or after December 7th 1922. Thus McGuigan probably sneaks it for me, if Monaghan misses the cut on the date.
Point of correction, the province of Ulster did not split from the rest of Ireland, only six of the nine counties did.
Furthermore Monaghan was one of the three that remain in the Republic to this day, so McGuigan is not from Northern Ireland.

Semantics. Such a small country we shouldn't even ask about the North and South and simply compile a list for the whole of Ireland. But regardless, in spirit of the question, I would also add in Bunty Doran who beat among others: Jackie Paterson, Theo Medina, Jimmy Warnock, Stan Rowan and Norman Lewis. Also there was a fighter whom my predecssors always referred to as 'untouchable'. Such was his defense. That was Billy 'Spider' Kelly.

Ike Weir. The Belfast Spider.

Though NI didn't technically exist back then.

You think that it's semantics wheather you live in the North, ie Aintrim, Armagh, Down, Derry, Tyrone, Fermanagh or the Southern Irish counties of Donegal, Monaghan or Cavan?

Paddy Barnes, with two Olympic medals in this ultra-competive era plus Commonwealth and Europen Golds is hard to argue against as best amature.
Pro? well McLarnin would be my number one if you include him (and I would) but Monaghan has a shout and two guys maybe not mentioned yet, Dave Magill and Dave Boy McAuley.

Matt, I wasn't being insulting, I simply meant we're splitting hairs by recognising someone maybe a couple of miles one way or another, much like you recognising a Jimmy McLarnin who was a child when he left and never donned a pair of gloves until he was in Vancouver. I have no problem recognising McLarnin's lineage but I think a better list would comprise the whole of Ireland and that's including McLarnin.
