Pipino Cuevas
Training in New York, at Gleason's Gym, in June 1979. Pipino came into New York City to see the Carlos Palomino vs. Roberto Duran bout at Madison Square Garden on June 22, 1979. Pipino was actually scouting Carlos Palomino for a possible late-1979 bout. But,,,,,,,,,,,

For their 'first bout' in Baja California. Angel Espada (Fight Purse; $85,000) Pipino Cuevas (Fight Purse; $7500) Angel Espada was a 5-1 Favorite (Las Vegas Odds) |

Dave,
In their first bout in Baja California - 'Pipino' Cuevas nearly ran Angel Espada out of the ring in the 1st-Round. "Cholo' was running for dear life, back-pedalling backwards at 'high-speed' after eating a left hook to the jaw. You could see the 'fear' in Espada, as he had no clue on how to hold this 'crazed' Mexican teenage off of him. Pipino just kept whipping in left hands, and he had no regard for defense or any respect of 'Cholo' Espada's punching power. It was like the word was out, Angel Espada was really an old 28 1/2. |

and was scampering all over the ring. In Round 2, after backing Espada up, 'Pipino' landed one tremendous left hook, and the 11,000 fans at the 'Plaza de Toros Calafia' (Bull Ring) in Mexicali, Baja California erupted. |
