I've trained with Roy several times, and he's come to fights of mine.

Really friendly guy, astute boxing mind on a subjective level. Talked to him a day after Tarver III, he was just crushed, it's a memory that will always stick with me.

I'd told people that he'd gotten caught because he made a mistake when Tarver cold ****ed him first, and that he wasn't ready for a fighter as intense as Glen Johnson when he got clipped second. But I had 5th row seats for Tarver III, and watching that fight, it was clear that enough of Roy Jones was gone that he wasn't the best 175er anymore; He couldn't get out of the way, which means he could be bullied and overwhelmed. Fighters like Tarver, Calzaghe, Johnson, Lebedev...He needs his legs to stand a stance against guys like that.

He was twice badly hurt/dropped by retired Jimmy Ellis prior to Shavers fight.

In sparring. And against Shavers he was hurt but never dropped, even though he was already way past his best. So I take that with a pinch of salt.

I don't see why it shouldn't count. In sparring they actually wear bigger gloves, harder to hurt the opponent with them.

That's a cool story Magna

Did you spar with him before and after his prime? To me he looked weaker and to not hit as hard after his prime, aside from the lack of movement. If you sparred with him before and after what did you notice?

There's that round in Tarver 3 where he dominates and clowns Tarver. He could only keep that up for a round at that stage though. If only past prime Jones had a black bottle

Yeah I know, thanks for explaining the basics to me. It also lacks the intensity of a fight situation. When did Ellis hurt Ali in their fights? Did Shavers drop Ali?

All I'm saying is a sparring contest doesn't mean anything towards my overall evalutation of Ali's chin. When it mattered, he was tough as old boots.

Yes.

His legacy would have been greater and his all time status higher had he fought and defeated Darius Michelczewski and Graciano Rocchigiani.

Chin is chin. Bigger gloves are bigger gloves. Shavers... is a poor, rather slow and predictable boxer.

Leaning back in straight lines.

Soft guard when leaning on ropes.
