Default How useful is boxing in street fighting ?

Boxing training = obviously gives you fitness and skills and conditioning.

The ability to punch someone accurately and fast and hard as you possible can - possibly knocking them out - depending on your power ?#

Also gives you some confidence that you can handle yourself.

But how real or false is this confidence ?

What I mean is I been boxing training for so many years - never fought competively - but sparred in the gym - worked on pads and bags and speedball - skipping and floorwork and conditioning.

So I have a reasonable level of confidence that I can handle myself to a degree but also what am I vunerable too in a street fight siutatuion - I think I'm bound to be alot more of handful with my fists - compared to someone who has never done any kind of combat sports before - but will that be enough ?

I try to avoid violence in real life and the discipline you get from training and carry yourself actually makes me much less likely to get into violence - but if someone choose to assault me - how useful would boxing skills be ?

Consider - anything goes in street fighting / assaults / muggings -

The person who assaults you could be of any size or weight (could be alot bigger than you)
Eye gouging
Biting
Kicking Strangling
Headlocks
Grappling around on the floor
Head butting
Even the use of weapons - knifes and bars , etc

How would boxing be of any use there - ? would it be ?

I know of what guy I use to train with years ago in the gym - he was working as a undercover doorman - and there was a drunk there looking for trouble and he picked on this guy - boxer / cage fighter - and he knocked him out with one punch - and he hit his head going down and he actually died. This is nasty stuff - so obviuosly boxing skills can be useful in self defence.

But what about when it goes to the ground - and like me - you have no real ground skills ? Does boxing help you then ?

Just wondering what people would think ?

This comment doesn't even make sense.
If a person feels confident, they feel confident.

And its just as common an injury in many street punch knockouts. With no rubber or canvas flooring, the person's head snaps back and all his weight crashes skull-first into the pavement. Cranial fracture then Manslaughter charges.

Punches dont kill people, concrete does...
Even a twelve year old girl can kill you if she slams a hammer atop your skull.

This isn't rocket science. Any trained fighter (regardless of martial art) will do better than non-trained fighters in street fights (8/10 times).
If they get you down on a ground or in any position that nullifies your skills, then heck, they're still about as useless as you are on the ground, so fight back and hope for the best.

Does everyone agree or disagree with this statement ?

Certain martial arts like TKD or karate are useless because of how they practice...

Boxing and full-contact sparring kickboxing are most useful.

The stronger, better conditioned, cooler and more aggressive person (not fighter) will do better.

Boxing gives you striking ability, this alone does not win a fight. Somebody could be an amazing boxer in a ring, that doesn't mean this person has the mentality to hit someone without gloves.

Of course having a striking ability gives you an advantage over any average Joe. But street fights have many, many different factors to take into account; how you're being attacked (grabbed, held on to, thrown to the ground etc), how many people are attacking you, weapons, where you are etc will affect how you fight.

Overall boxing can be useful if you get lucky and land a punch or two, if not it's useless. Being a boxer does not make you a fighter.

I think it's bullshit. There are so many variables in a street fight. Weight, height. I've beat a boxer in a street fight before but It depends on levels as well. I also know a boxer who sparked the local hard guy. It helps if you box but it doesn't mean you can't get caught with a good punch by a regular guy.

local story..This guy had boxed amir khan and got kod by him, this was early into khans pro career. Anyway the boxer walked into a local pub and was basically taken the piss out of by the local hard guy, the boxer offered the guy ten free punches at him, the local hard guy started swinging and missed with every one and then was kod in a punch.

This is so wrong from start to finish. I see the point you're trying to get across, but maybe you used the wrong examples or wording all together.
