Gai Yang Ha Dow is a very popular brand of pre roasted chickens sold all over Bangkok fresh of the spit by small vendor franchises on the street. Over the last few years they've become heavily involved in sponsoring MT and western boxers and have their own gym. Pongsaklek for example was sponsored by them and so is Sam A amongst a load of other top talent.

Gai Yang Ha Dow translates as 5 star roast chicken. So as you know in Thailand a fighter adopts the name of his gym or sponsor so you get guys called 1st name followed by 5 star roast chicken or Pongsaklek 5 star roast chicken, Sam A 5 star roast chicken. Sounds nuts I know but that's why we all love Thailand, anything goes......

Intact of you rewatch some of Pong's last boxing fights notice the cartoon chicken on his shorts well that's the logo of the company.

Great post Stormy. Sam A trying to be serious but Somluck always playing as usual. I don't think he'd take his own funeral serious. Great clip.

Thats the Petchyindee camp on Rama 4 road above the Twins shop as Lumpinee. Never used to be there until a few years ago.

WTF not sure how interesting the fight will actually, but in Thailand anything goes.......I'll certainly be watching it!

That clip demonstrates how much of a "natural" fighter Somluck is to me. He's much older than Sam A, doesn't train seriously anymore, although he is bigger and they're not sparring too hard, he's just having fun in there and to my eye, getting the better of Sam A.

Man is a living legend. I believe he has a gym, I wonder if he still actively trains fighters. Maybe he'll produce another Saenchai.

You're right Somluck is Samart -esqe in his natual abitlty to read and anticiapte everything so dam easily. Like taking candy from a child in most fights.

His gym's called Sor.Kamsing, and yep he mostly trains guys these days. But what he's got how do you teach it?!?!? But we all know Somluck's where Saenchai learnt his trikiness and decptively good defensive skills. On the topic of natural talent and Samart, here's a clip of him and Malaipet doing some light technical sparring from 2005. Samart way past his prime, in his 40's, and still looking pretty good.

I think there's a mental component the most "natural" guys tap into, confidence, the ability to relax under pressure, have no fear and willingness to try techniques that others wouldn't. No doubt there are physical gifts they have too though.

I personally like Kongtoranee's style more, he's just as slick as Samart, mixing the classic stalker/forward mode with really good reading and countering. Didn't have the speed/power(still had a lot, just Samart was one tier up) or creativity though.

I think I'm gonna try to investigate the current crop of Khamsing fighters, see who's coming up.

I too like Kong's style, but there is something about his squat frame that causes my brain to see him as clumsier nad not as elegant as Samart, but that's proabaly just an illusion.

I think the realxed attitude you're talking about isn't just found in the super "natural" guys but most Thai fighters. The first thing that struck me about fighters in Thailand is just how unmacho the enviroment and bulid up to fights are. In the west there is abit of a toughman attutde to alot of gyms and the fight game and this spills out into trash talk and guys really psyching themselves upto fight or even sometimes spar, now in Thailand there is none of that at all.

They are just so matter of fact about fighting, it's as natural or as normal as going up the road to order a bowl of noodles. I think they get far more psyched and ramped up about chatting up chicks. This is why they fight so dam often compared to any other full contact fighters out there. Twice a month is easy for them, no problem. At Songkrahn the big national holiday, the one real time of the year when all Thais have the right to a break and a holiday, all the fighters leave the gyms and go home for a week or two but alot of them instaed of drinking loads of whisky and putting theier feet up go home and fight on local shows in their home towns in thier own time for a pittance.

I think this realaxed but adventurous attitude about fighting comes across even more so with the top boys.

By the way I just found this about one of Somluck's boyz. it maybe useful to you in your search for info, although this isn't the guy I was talking about above. Check Rob Cox's Muay Thai Focus site in the archives, I'm sure I remember reading some intersting stuff about his his fighters there.

Sorry yaca I totally missed this post! Great post to!

I love Pornsaneh to me he's a throwback fighter. A totally excitng come froward fighter who's preference is to kick and punch. But he's a real thinker as well, not like an alls balls out Bovy come forward guy, Pornsaneh's as ballsy as Bovy but he's way more tactical. You know his end goal is always the same ie he wants to land that low rigght round kick, but he seems to confuse you into beliveing otherwise by mixing things up so well with his hands.

His right kick is fuckin wickedly evil . The kind of sterotypical brutally repetative Thai low kick that throws back to the 90s and still causes western fighters to shake i nthier boots!

Shame he's not 10 kilos bigger and he could cause some serious international damage image him K-1 style with those fists nad feet! He'd be a great addition to the Thai Fight promotion to.

By the way all credit to Kongnabha for deciding he didn't want to taste anymore lowkicks and needed to try to end it in round 2 with elbows, oened things up nicely, great spirit.

I was watching that and thought this is a mismatch, a rare thing in Thailand until Sipayak put Kataphet on his arse with that kick! Great come back although it was kinda clear in the next round it was a lucky strike as Sipayak was clearly the weaker fighter, but to his credit he really showed true Thai spirit and went for it. But that finfishung kick for Kataphet....class... and with the lead leg to! He'd been sizing that one up for a while.
