Default DEFENDING AGAINST LUNGES? [[ Sparring video included ]]

i am very much a noob, and dont ever intend to compete seriously, but i do enjoy punch-up sessions with friends

Question being: how do you defend against a lunging attack (crossing feet, jumping and using the whole body weight) ?

I got KD not necessarily from the punch, but because of the momentum from his body.

Please try to excuse the shit lack of defense; i was trying to shoulder roll and failed.

Things that come to my mind are: 1. guard up proper D, 2. lateral movement?

Thank you for your help

There is nothing to be ashamed of and apologize for!

Definitely not by raising your chin up and leaning backwards...

Trust me, many people want to fight their hands down like Floyd or Sergio Martinez. You can do it, but learn the basics first:

1) Chin down
2) Hands up
3) Balance
4) Distance
5) Proper stance

these are the cures to most of your sparring problem

Cheers!

I like to point out your backfoot is all over the place at time's.You need to work on footwork and just work on the basics from the jab to the 1-2 then mix it up with a left hook right hand. After year's of boxing to do the philly shell and be great at it is rare. distance is the key in knowing when to throw the punches. If your serious about boxing then get yourself down to a boxing club and let the trainer teach you from scratch

i wouldn't consider that a legit knockdown given the fact you seemed off-balanced.

Anyway back to your question, the dude in greying is LUNGING alot! He is coming in at you and jumping in from like 10 feet away. When he lunges in, he is sort of in mid-air and is off-balanced. Keep your eyes on him and when you see him lunge in, take a side step or just a step back and then throw a straight right (Like mayweather's pull counter)

Also, keep your hands up and chin tucked down tight to make yourself less vulnerable to these lunges.

You can also try ultilizing that jab of yours. Constant jabbing will disrupt his lunges

I sparred a brawler for the first time last week who likes to lunge in with his jab/lead left hook. Wasn't quite as wild as the guy in the video, but I found that just throwing the jab kept him at bay for the most part, and when he did lunge in, I was able to catch him with my jab on his way in more often than not.

lol whatever that "lunge" is its absolutely incorrect technique... dear god do yourself a favor and when he does that throw a straight right hand down the pipe as hes coming in and you will score a knockdown

well to be honest everyone can explain here but you'd have to practice day in an out on defense. That's what boxing gyms are for, you wont build the muscle memory and reaction time in one day and looking at a forum. Not an insult i remember training at a mcdojo and asking the forums and i was completely lost so i assume that not even training at all it's not really going to help.

stop trying to do these fancy moves, if anything stick to the basics

^ Very true. I was just trying get a third person perspective, i realize getting advice on a forum wont instantly make me better. I havent even started training in a proper gym yet. Hopefully i will be in by November; boxing gyms are expensive as hell in New Zealand :(

Well, seeing as how you don't plan on serious training, I don't see how you will get serious advice either. Solid advice will require you to study and practice the sport more in depth for you to achieve a proper solution. Of course, if you did, you probably wouldn't be asking this in the first place so I get where your coming from. But my advice would begin so far away from just defending against your friend that it'd be useless to you at this very moment.
Wear heavier gloves to avoid unnecessary injuries.
