Gary Thornill was a very good fighter, Dean Pithie underachieved a bit really. Remember he converted the downstairs of his house to a boxing gym.

I remember Richie Wenton, remember his fight in Italy against Belcastro. The gloves really marked his skin up that night. Made of horse hair can remember the commentator mentioning it a few times. Here's Richie against Barrera.

Good thread, this, lads.

Dean Francis was a talent in his day and ought to have done a lot more with what he had. Smooth boxer and a very big puncher but was never the most dedicated, and ****ing up his shoulder really derailed him.

Hodkinson and McMillan were another two. Massive puncher and slick cutie, though McMillan was another one who underachieved considering his talent. He was a pleasing fighter to watch aesthetically but didn't hit hard enough and tended to become too static and open under punishment than his style should have allowed. Hodkinson was slow and cut easily but was an excellent hitter, had good punching form and put his shots together well. And a howitzer of a left hook. Some of the stuff the fading Villasana took from him was unreal. Then again, Villasana was unreal in general when it came to taking punches. The 90's were decent in general for British featherweights with Robinson, Ingle etc.

I'd have loved to see Jamie Moore or Danny Williams win a belt, Moore especially. He's maybe my favourite British fighter of my generation - I was well put out when Rhodes derailed him because he had it in him to be successful at today's world level. Brave as **** but probably not durable enough. Good sneaky puncher though with hurtful power, especially to the body. That fight (you all know which one) was probably the greatest war of recent years in a British ring.

I've always liked Ian Napa too, but he should have learned to use the Philly shell properly and move better on his feet if he was ever going to get past his size and lack of power. The bantams were just too big for him most of the time.

Minter, conteh and Magri were my first boxing heroes. Still love watching their fights. Rarely hear anyone talk about minter but think he deserves better. Loved watching Kirkland laing, sibson, herol Graham and Colin jones. Could go on for ever with my British heroes.

I grew up at back end of Herol's career him beating Pazienza,Johnson and then losing in heartbreaking fashion to Brewer. Always guts me to this day! i was instantly a fan of Herol's.

Wally Swift Jr. Earnest and brave little battler who fought and won the British light-middleweight crown in the early 90s. For some of his title fights he weighed closer to welterweight than the light middle limit.

Mark Kaylor

Always gave his all in the ring and rarely took a backward step. A real tough battler.
