without the cuts I think Vitali would have won but if the fight continued Vitali's career would have been in jeopardy. The ref had to stop the fight.

without dropping his guard and going for it getting his eye mashed in the first place, he wouldnt have been ahead on points. Vitali was in a lose-lose situation, he never had the ability to beat Lewis in the first place, even old slow end of career Lewis.

Surely the match wouldn't have lasted 12 rounds, it would have lasted at least 1 or maximum 2 more rounds before Lennox definitely gassed out or broke his chin... Lennox was on bambi legs already in the 2nd round, were he was very close to fall and passed on only grabbing and clinching; about the cut, it has clearly have been explained, watching in slow motion, to have been made by the tape that hold the glove, not by a direct punch; Manny Steward, terrified for knowing the kind of chin of Lennox, screamed in his ear to hit him directly on the cut, which is what Lennox did, repeatedly; anyway, the cuts stopped to blood after just some rounds, and to bleed by a cut above the eye is not like to bleed by the eye.

Lennox took the best Vitali had to give, withstood it and was coming back stronger than Vitali could handle - as evidenced by Vitali holding on in the final round of the fight in the above GIF - no way does Vitali last the full 12 with cuts that bad against Lennox, Lennox was powerful enough to make those cuts so much worse than they were.
Without the cuts Vitali might last 12 rounds but he was gassed by the end of the 6th, he'd thrown so much into trying to knock Lennox out early that he didn't have much more to give, so those early rounds he won would mean little with Lennox coming on the stronger as the fight progressed. |

Great thread MVC.
Instead of talking about 'rematches' and bullshit thumbing, more people should talk about what WOULD have happened if the fight had continued.. This is the big issue, Vitali gave Lewis the best he had during the first 2 rounds. Lennox literally WALKED through Vitali's best punches. Vitali wasn't getting stronger, he was getting weaker from all the blood loss and punishment. If you rewatch the 6th round, he was seriously hurt and clinging on to Lewis every chance he got. Lennox meanwhile told Manny "I got him now, he's figured out". Vitali would have probably suffered a life long injury if the fight had gone to even the 8th much less the 12th. In fact just the 7th might have seen Vitali lose his eye. Lewis was a ruthless lion in the ring, he would have kept targeting that cut. As much as I dislike Vitali, I would not have want to see the fight continued. Seeing Vitali's eye fall out would probably have negative effects on Lennox's conscience. |
