I have heard from some decent grapplers, one ex world champion in bjj- that the first thing a grappler should learn is all the escapes from all the dominant positions, and each position has many escapes as they can be countered. then im guessing one should learn the escaoes for individual locks, chokes etc.
thoughts? |

just to add. they said if you can master the escapes of all the positions and submissions then it will be harder for the higher ranks including black belts to submit you

Watch Rickson Gracie, Marcelo Garcia, Ribero and others... and do what they do. Easy game.
Just like in striking. Watch what Anderson does; copy it = win. Easier done than said, imo. |

Train heaps.
I agree with the escapes. Learn escapes from everything, everywhere, drill them all the time and roll from your worst positions. When it comes to offence, learn 5 or so techniques and learn them well. That's probably one of the best things I've ever heard about BJJ. Learn a handful techniques and know them inside out and back to front and drill them constantly. No point knowing 300 subs and performing them all decently if the opportunity presents itself when you can know 3 and perform them flawlessly every time from everywhere. |

saulo teaches a variation of this. not escapes but what could be called defensive posture. but then again very high level black belts have also told me the exact opposite. the thing with white belts is when other white belts know all the escapes it erodes confidence in the techniques and as a result they tend to clam up and not try anything for fear of losing position which is the exact opposite of what you want in a grappler. personally i dont think you should be learning escapes until at least blue belt. |

It should go without saying that you want to know the escapes and reversals for everything but the secret to good jiujitsu is in the clinch. Rorion Gracie says it in one of the Gracie In Action videos I believe, "if you have good clinch you have good jiujitsu." Think on this and meditate, young grasshopper.

![]() Rorion Gracie is one of thee most irritating men to listen to about Jiu Jitsu. 10th Planet is all about the clinch and they are not tearing it up in sport BJJ or MMA. The secret to success in anything is to train really hard, also at a high level, especially in MMA Jiu Jitsu is so much about transitions a, reacting to he other guy by changing position on them. |

The secret is oil!
Oil your whole body and then you can escape from most positions. Also training... that helps too... On another note... I get to trian with Leo Vieira this week coming ![]() Lynchburg |

BJJ fundamentals - position BEFORE submission
Get a good grounding in positioning and control then your base will be solid when attacking and defending against submission |
